MONCKS CORNER Two Florida students accused of having pipe bombs in the trunk of their car when they were pulled over in Goose Creek are "confused and scared," their attorney said Monday.
Yousseff Megahed, 21, and Ahmed Mohamed, 26, both Egyptian citizens, were calm and polite in Berkeley County bond court. They were charged Monday with carrying explosive devices, which is a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
The weekend arrest drew national attention, because the U.S. Naval Consolidated Brig, a military prison where enemy combatants are held, and the Naval Weapons Station are nearby. An FBI spokesman said the two are not suspected of being part of a terrorist plot.
The leader of a Muslim advocacy group who has been talking with Megahed's family said the two were heading to North Carolina to celebrate Mohamed's birthday, which was Sunday...
Ayers set a $300,000 bond for Megahed and $500,000 for Mohamed. Solicitor Scarlett Williams argued that the two were flight risks. A hearing on the charges is scheduled for Oct. 5.
An affidavit from the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office said officers from the bomb squad determined that pipe bombs were in the trunk. Pipe bombs are homemade explosives, and making or having them is a felony...The two were pulled over about 5:30 p.m. Saturday near U.S. Highway 176 and Myers Road in Goose Creek. Their attorney, Dennis Rhoad of Charleston, said he had not had a chance to ask them why they were in Goose Creek...
Both men are students at the University of South Florida in Tampa....

Earlier was a report that the “explosives” and “pipe bombs” are mostly firecrackers. I’m waiting for a fuller description of the “explosives” for now.
They also said “what you call pipe bombs, we call firecrackers.” Yeah, and what we call flying jets into buildings, you call not learning how to land.
Waterboard them in the Cooper River.
“confused and scared,” ????
WTF do expect would happen to a coupla ‘Merican students driving around outside an Egyptian naval base with pipe bombs in the trunk of their car? Waterboarding would be a minor prank compared to what they’d undergo.
"Family members are very concerned, shocked about what has developed," said Ahmed Bedier, executive director of the Tampa chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
The contents of the trunk might have been part of the celebration, he said.
The terrorist enablers at CAIR really know how to party, huh.
Whatever you do, DON’t PUT PANTIES ON THEIR HEADS!!!!
Frankly that’s plausible. As we saw recently with Iraq’s soccer victory, celebrations in that neck of the woods often involve firing live rounds into the air, with resulting casualties. They do this at weddings too . . .

Americans like to celebrate their birthday by dropping bombs on mosques. How 'bout next 4th of July, dropping a 10 Megaton wet firecracker on Mecca?
Alahu Akbar!...
two were heading to North Carolina to celebrate Mohamed’s birthday, which was Sunday...
They were going the wrong direction on US 176, if they were going to NC. They were heading north to Orangeburg, perhaps to get on I95, but still, if they were in Charleston, why not go up US17 towards NC or I26 then to I95. Doesn’t make sense on the road they were on.
Fireworks in Egypt: google it and be surprised;
Egypt State Information Service - Egypt’s gala of the new millennium wound up as it started with fireworks & homemade pipe bombs in a joyful show despite the fog which clad the area and that ...
lol
‘Megahed’
Sounds like one of those Japanese cartoon villians.
How do you explain a pipe bomb in your trunk? How do you dissemble so far as to appear confused about the consequences of being found with explosives in your vehicle?
More to the point, how does a rational person look at this and think these two are innocent? Sorry, just my take.
They didn’t look confused and scared on TV yesterday. They were squirming around, smiling and had challenging poses in court. FRY the bastards!!
We can add to the festivities! What’s the 509th doing to celebrate “Hiroshima Day” anyway?
