Baucus Won't Face Primary Challenger
Billings Gazette ^ | August 6, 2007 | Charles Johnson

HELENA - For months, the rumor mill had Paul Edwards, a screenwriter from Helena and chairman of the new Progressive Democrats of Montana, challenging U.S. Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., from the party's left next year.

Edwards made it clear he's not planning to take on Baucus in the Democratic primary and is unaware of anyone else who is.

Charles Johnson is the dean of political reporting in Montana, and if he says it, it is pretty certain to be true.

This is a sign that the "progressive wing" of the Democratic Party in Montana realizes that Baucus is more vulnerable than is commonly assumed.

The last thing the lefties in MT want is to have Daily Kos, et al, hang a Baucus loss around their neck and watch a Republican Senator head to Washington from Montana.

Much as they hate Baucus for being too "conservative" (you know, an ACU rating in the 30's or so,) they have decided to loyally carry water for him and to train their fire on whatever Republicans enter the race.

Too bad, it’s always nice to see moonbats tearing apart the Demagogic Party.

Any word on prospects for defeating Baucus?

A long shot, but doable.

And only if we get some serious attention and help from the national GOP.

There are very few chances for GOP pickups in the Senate in 2008 — while Baucus is considered a “safe seat” for the Dems, this is actually one that the GOP could narrowly steal, with a good candidate and a smart campaign.

With the way that the present Democratically controlled Congress continues to behave along with their poll numbers continuing to be even lower than President Bush’s poll numbers, how can there truly be very few chances for possible GOP pickups in ‘08 and beyond no matter what political offices are being discussed? “Capitalism-Not Socialism” is what truly needs to be frequently said. The U.S. as we presently know it to be as a country will truly disappear with the Democrats in control of almost everything from January ‘09 on.

The GOP had a very good year in 2002, so we are defending a lot more seats.

Of the seats Dems are defending, most are in solidly blue states or are otherwise safe for the Dems. Good news is we only need a net pickup of two seats (one if we win the White House.)

Bottom line is that the GOP needs tob work to defeat Baucus.
