THE WEEKLY STANDARD has learned from a military source close to the investigation that Pvt. Scott Thomas Beauchamp--author of the much-disputed "Shock Troops" article in the New Republic's July 23 issue as well as two previous "Baghdad Diarist" columns--signed a sworn statement admitting that all three articles he published in the New Republic were exaggerations and falsehoods--fabrications containing only "a smidgen of truth," in the words of our source.
Separately, we received this statement from Major Steven F. Lamb, the deputy Public Affairs Officer for Multi National Division-Baghdad:
An investigation has been completed and the allegations made by PVT Beauchamp were found to be false. His platoon and company were interviewed and no one could substantiate the claims.
According to the military source, Beauchamp's recantation was volunteered on the first day of the military's investigation. So as Beauchamp was in Iraq signing an affidavit denying the truth of his stories, the New Republic was publishing a statement from him on its website on July 26, in which Beauchamp said, "I'm willing to stand by the entirety of my articles for the New Republic using my real name."
The magazine's editors admitted on August 2 that one of the anecdotes Beauchamp stood by in its entirety--meant to illustrate the "morally and emotionally distorting effects of war"--took place (if at all) in Kuwait, before his tour of duty in Iraq began, and not, as he had claimed, in his mess hall in Iraq. That event was the public humiliation by Beauchamp and a comrade of a woman whose face had been "melted" by an IED.
Nothing public has been heard from Beauchamp since his statement standing by his stories, which was posted on the New Republic website at 6:30 a.m. on July 26. In their August 2 statement, the New Republic's editors complained that the military investigation was "short-circuiting" TNR's own fact-checking efforts. "Beauchamp," they said, "had his cell-phone and computer taken away and is currently unable to speak to even his family. His fellow soldiers no longer feel comfortable communicating with reporters. If further substantive information comes to light, TNR will, of course, share it with you."
Now that the military investigation has concluded, the great unanswered question in the affair is this: Did Scott Thomas Beauchamp lie under oath to U.S. Army investigators, or did he lie to his editors at the New Republic? Beauchamp has recanted under oath. Does the New Republic still stand by his stories?
The lefties will say the military beat a false confession out of him.
You’re right that McCord was innocent in the show. I’d just like to see beauchamp publicly disgraced and thrown out of the Army.
So would I..but I wonder if that is really what he wants to happen. He will always have his troop hating, America hating lib pinko buddies to hang onto. The press will give him no notice because of their (hoped for) red faces.
The media just hopes no one notices the big lie.
No more joking around.
Its time to bring back the sedition act and start making these people pay.
A soldier sliming his fellow soldiers in an online magazine based on lies all to get his mug on a liberal rag and earn pats on the back from the collaborators.
If that isnt treason, what is?
And the Soldiers from Beauchamp’s unit should SUE THE HELL OUT OF THE NEW REPUBLIC!!
Semper Fi,
Kelly
I think this is far from over. TNR is claiming it has proven Beauchamps claims by speaking to others in his unit.
The TNR will promptly fire its editor because of this.

This lying sos can become a liar for the the NY Slimes, Compost or LA Slimes.
Then, he can move to Ma to replace Kerry or Kennedy as a Rat liar in the US Senate, whenever Kerry or Kennedy stop leaving their enormous carbon footprints.
This lying pos is another example of why demonicRats should not be in our military.
Bumping the reality of this lying pos versus the lib wet dreams about him.
“They never learn do they?”
Not a few of them have learned that lying pays. You just have to find the right audience.
I’m shocked a liberal rag like New Republic would stoop to fake but accurate pieces!
I would much rather see the media continue its “downward slide”.
They have no intention of being “fair and balanced,” so why help their butts?
Why anyone would trust anything the New Republic prints now is beyond me.
People still aren’t getting it... that’s why they’re shutting this down.
There are anti-war activists in Germany (ours travel there as well), they go to the hotspots soldiers hang out in and recruit them... if they can’t, they constantly attempt to lower their morale.
This is more insidious (and there are a couple more blogging, but not yet writing in a spot for a serious pub. or blog), these folks like with Scotty, get recruited TO GO IN THE MILITARY for the sole purpose of writing this stuff with credibility. Columbia Journalism puts out a lot of this type of cretin... it’s planned.
A normal person, and yes i’m normal, would say “Who the heck would go there in order to do this?”, that’s what I said in the beginning. Then I started digging in their blogs and anti-war sites (as well as Berkeley/Columbia others), and found out he was associated with folks who brought the Rumsfeld charge over there (because that’s where they could), and lots of anti-war groups do a lot of traveling there to recruit out of the bases/posts. And I mean to the point of good looking girls sleeping with them to change their minds.
Lots of folks will still not believe it, but sadly, it’s true.
Are those all lies by reporters?
Ever notice all of the lies are meant to help only “liberals” and “progressives”? and never ‘in favor’ of the conservative side?
bump
So the Cheryl Crow version was a remake? /s
I said that when the first NYTs WaPo leaks came out. I don’t care if they win on First Amendment, drag their *sses in there anyway; At least they would think twice.
And what’s with the DOJ?
W should have cleaned house when he got in... too many holdovers that don’t know anything but cover-up and subversion.
Especially that VIPS crew attached to the fifth column inside. They’re sloppy and should have been tried long ago.
First one is Stephen Glass, Anita and Blair are correct, but who’s the fourth?
