Got an opinion regarding web proxy services you use (or have used)?
Vanity / Technical Advice
I see lots of free web proxy services out there, but also suspect many of them are there to intercept and review the data passing over them.
I'm just accessing my home pc so this is not like an international banking thing, but I'd rather have some feedback first regarding web proxy services others have used and found helpful (or not) as well as any opinions regarding how trustworthy & legitimate the service might be.
Thanks
Lloyd
A proxy service sniffing your data is the least of your concerns. The Internet is not secure period.
If your communications controlling your PC is suitably encrypted it doesn’t matter what proxy you use.
Just my opinion...
If your company has blocked access to that service I’d ask them for an exception and if they say no I’d forget about doing it. They may allow you to VPN from home. I VPN to a friend’s site to surf the web.
I highly recommend COTSE (Church Of The Swimming Elephant).
I’ve been with them for a long time and I am extremely pleased with their service and performance.
Cotse provides more than just a proxy service however, I would suggest a visit to their websites:
www.cotse.com
www.cotse.net
The founder, owner and proprietor (Steve Gielda) is one of the sharpest minds in the business IMHO.

If your work has blocked this access and you deliberately try to circumvent those controls, you may subject yourself to discipline or termination. You should read your company’s acceptable use policy before trying anything like that. I am the information security manager for my employer, and let me tell you, it is not that difficult to find people attempting to bypass the firewall and web filters by using an external proxy. It’s just not worth it - wait until you get home.
Not sure why they would have blocked this as it's a Citrix arrangement and about as safe as anything else we connect to.
Thanks for the advice however, appreciated
Cheers,
Lloyd
Get Firefox if you’re not already using it, then install the proxy switcher plugin.
You give it a list of proxies and tell it how often to switch them and it goes through them all in sequence.
They would block it because it's a backchannel into the network that they do not have control over, cannot audit and cannot restrict with AAA. That's why it's blocked.
