Jack Bauer's Next Mission: Fighting Global Warming
washingtonpost.com ^ | August 5, 2007 | Eviana Hartman

From "An Inconvenient Truth" to popularizing the Prius, Hollywood has helped lead the way on some environmental issues. One of the latest initiatives: Cool Change, Fox's company-wide program to reduce the network's impact on global warming. As part of that effort, the seventh season of "24" will take steps to reduce and offset the carbon emissions from the show's production, with the goal of having the season finale be entirely carbon-neutral.

It may sound like a publicity stunt, but Fox spokesman Chris Anderson says the network isn't after bigger ratings. "We are publicizing '24's' commitment to climate change for two reasons and two reasons only: to inspire the public to take global warming seriously and hopefully to motivate other studios to make changes to their production practices as well," he says.

“It’s the production of the show not the plot.”

We shall see, Afronaut, we shall see.

Like #2 said, “Any series that doesn’t feature Muslims as the bad guys is a waste of twenty-four hours.”

All and all, not a good sign especially from Fox. If the Islamofacists detonate a nuclear weapon within the United States I’d bet the carbon footprint that it leaves will more than outweigh 24s efforts to reduce its emissions by a magnitude. Priorites, folks!!!!

This is production, not necessarily plot.

If you read the official press release, you'll see that they're planning to weave the theme into the plot whenever possible also.

to inspire the public to take global warming seriously

Buying a hose and a sprinkler is about as serious as most people are gonna get.

I know its a production piece, however the mindset creep will be inevitable.

Look for a high speed chase involving 3 swarthy men in a Hummer full of weapons and Jack in a specially prepared armored Pirus...

But IMHO, Jack shouldn’t worry so much about saving the environment (or Audrey for that matter) and should worry about saving the show.

"Listen Dammit... If you don't switch to fluorescent light bulbs and cut your carbon footprint I'm going to carve out your eyeballs!"

I'm just not sure it works...

I’m sure the ratings on that version of the show will be about like those for Al Gore’s Earth aid concerts.

Heard next season will have female president with a name that sounds very close to Hillary Rodham Clinton. I’m sure she’ll be potrayed as ms. hero who is under attack from evil republicans and conservatives and jack will have to come to her rescue.

Sorry 24, but I see where your headed. You’ve lost a watcher. I’m done with the show. Buh-bye.

Nothing wrong with trying to offset the 15,000 s.f. house of the average Hollywood hybrid owner.

IMO, they jumped the shark last year with episode 4. After that, they had to do SOMETHING to keep it interesting - and failed miserably.

Well, in all fairness, they have done a pretty dang good job of not emphasizing party in the show. And they didn't exactly feel compelled to portray a black president in unfaltering light last season. I'm not sure why you think a woman president would be granted protected status.

For 24 to work, the president almost has to screw up for at least half the season or Jack has no reason to storm into the office and threaten to cut the eyeballs out of a close presidential aide.

I don't watch 24 until Christmas of the following year, when I get the box set as a gift. Maybe I should just ask for a sweater this year...

I, for one, applaud the efforts of Fox and “24” to ‘Save the Planet’, in response, I’m going to do my part to show support and I urge the millions of regular viewers to do the same.

I’m going to shut off my TV when the show airs, just think of all the energy this will save when millions of sets are turned off at the same time, especially with us with big HDTV TV”S.

It’s the least we can do.

Sorry: not interested in it anymore. Good grief. Terrorists didn’t give them enough to do; they have to be concerned with the global warming TIDE of left leaning hysteria? That’s when it loses its panache for me.
