I realize that I've taken this statement out of context, but it struck me that if it were worded as:
"...Why are we fighting Al Qaeda in Iraq?..."
... the answer becomes simple.
al Qaeda knew fully well that if Iraq remained free of a 'Saddamm' or any influence of clerical islamaniacs, then their vision of a World-Caliphate would be doomed for a very long time, possibly forever!

The present, booming, world economy depends greatly on an uninterupted supply of Middle-East oil in the near future, especially for China, and it's not by chance that the USA picked Iraq as the battleground!
Our Engineering Construction Battalions were deployed to Iraq last November, and our permanent Air, Army, and Naval Installations there should be nearly completed by now.
Is the 'Surge' working? Most definitely YES, and the traitorous politicos here at home, Murtha, Reid, Pelousi, klintoon, et-al, who have been actively working for our defeat, are gonna wind-up with a lot of egg on their faces.

Scott Ritter is another prime example of a war criminal paid off by Saddam to allow Saddam and his thugs to serially kill, maim and rape innocent Iraqis.
We cannot and must not leave before we win. If some terrorists dwelling in camps in Afghanistan with a limited budget and few volunteers were able to do 9/11 terrorist attacks, killed 3000 people and caused one trillion dollars in economic losses, imagine the incredible horrors that the terrorists can inflict on us if they control the whole Middle East and it vast revenues.
