Welcome to the club, Abigail. I am part of a generation of White males caught in the generation that had to watch all the Affirmative Action types get appointments and jobs and grants and so on, to make up for generations of bias. You’ll get used to it, but you may never like it.

In the ‘80s, I went to school to become a computer tech. I studied my butt off! My grades were perfect. I corrected all the mistakes in the school’s new textbooks. I graduated #1. The instructor had taken a job at the Lewis Research Center, and wanted to take me with him. At my job interview I was told that despite my high grades, and despite my instructor’s high praise, they could only hire a black women at that time. I had to take a job working night shift in a factory in order to pay off my school loan.
