BELGRADE -- Serbian police (MUP) says its officers came under attack in southern Serbia late last evening.
The incident occurred at 10 p.m. Saturday, on the road between Lučani and Končulj, when masked assailants, wearing black uniforms, first committed a number of robberies by shooting the passing cars tires and then robbing the drivers.
A patrol from the Bujanovac station arrived at the scene shortly after it was alerted, when gunmen opened fire at officers.
MUPs elite Gendarmerie, stationed at the nearby administrative boundary with Kosovo, also came under fire when they arrived.
Interior Minister Dragan Jočić told reporters this morning that there was a strong exchange of fire, that included fire from automatic rifles, hand grenades and RPGs, that left one of the attackers dead.
Jočić said the police believed the gunmen were members of the so called Končulj criminal group.
It was lucky Gendarmerie arrived at the scene quickly, since Bujanovac police was unable to take on the attackers on its own, and the incident would likely have ended with fatalities on the MUP side, he said.
What is interesting is that the criminals in question stopped and robbed Serbs and Albanians alike, threatening them in bad Serbian, Jočić said.
A MUP statement carried by Tanjug earleir said that police returned fire, but did not give any details about possible casualties or identity of the attackers.
The statement added that investigation was under way, and that police believed at least ten people participated in the armed attack against regular police and Gendarmerie officers last night.
Quick, can’t we call Bill Clinton in to tell us what to bomb? My —d, we should bomb something shouldn’t we?
Looks like people act according to their value system. These people have been given a value system that encourages attacking those outside of their cult.
