T'wit, FReeper extraordinaire, has died.
self | August 5, 2007 | 8mmMauser

Posted on 08/05/2007 3:55:55 AM PDT by 8mmMauser

A great FReeper and close friend passed. T’wit, also known as Timothy Wheeler passed on. In tribute, I would like to make this the August thread of Terri Dailies, the topic foremost in T’wit thoughts.

Tim was a man of great faith, a faith that grew stronger especially in recent months. As I type this, I still am not yet coherent, as I try to awaken and sip a good coffee brought to me recently by Tim. In his usual fashion, he probably figured I would appreciate a little care package and would appreciate the better quality than the usual fare we would fix.

But I do not want this thread to be maudlin, nor a reminiscing on anecdotes, rather a stab at what Tim would want.

T’wit was passionate about the beauty of nature, of good books, good music, and intellectual challenge, but mostly he was passionate about his love for our America, for Jim Robinson’s FreeRepublic, and for our fight for those in the plight of Terri Schiavo. For the latter, he sought justice and fervently hoped and prayed we on Terri’s List would carry on this battle against the evils of those who would control who lived and died.

In our many talks, he would sound like a poster boy for all the stated position of Jim Robinson.

His wife told me last evening the final thoughts he had. As can be expected, it was for us to continue our fight as we have done already. She hoped that rather than flowers or donations sent, that donations be directed at causes like that supporting Terri’s Legacy, the Terri Schindler Schiavo Foundation. In this way, we remember him and further his wishes. T’wit and I talked a lot about faith and I can reassure all, his faith in Our Lord was strong and growing stronger, a comfort to me that he carried it to the end.

My words come out with difficulty this morning, but should flow better later, although without the word play and banter we would sometimes engage, at least for now. T’wit would be upset if I quit the puns for long, though.

We will continue our prayers for T'wit and his wife and family.

I've entertained no doubts about Hillary Clinton's position on abortion but if I had, they would have been dispelled after the speech she gave before Planned Parenthood political activists on July 17th.

In June Cardinal Renato Martino (bio - news), the president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, scolded Amnesty International for a "pro-abortion about-turn," and encouraged Catholic donors to reconsider their support for the group. Episcopal conferences in several countries, including the US, soon joined in a campaign to reverse Amnesty's policy change.

Karl Rove imo didn't help Terri. He did nothing for her. If Bush's brain had, Terri would be alive now. We must remind all that Terri breathed on her own, had days and nights, recognized people, could follow directions and even had a sense of humor. She was deprived of rehabilitation but her personality would not be denied.

Unfortunately, she was robbed of everything including her constitutional rights as an American.

Don't let the white house screen door hit you on the way out, Karl. He belongs back in the futile care state (not surprised if that wasn't his idea to begin with). It t'wit were here, he'd know if Karl brainstormed on the futile care law of Texas.

I call “meth”. Of course these days, more and more folks are pure evil, but you have to also consider man-made drug use as well.

This isn’t like all these poor kids, but this is what habitual drug use does. My son got an email on myspace from his “stepsister” stating that her mother’s bf had broken Snowball’s back. He came in, and I guess the dog tripped him or something. My son called the house, and the asshole answered. They got into a heated discussion, to put it mildly. My bf wanted to drive 200 miles and throw Wayne up against the wall to see how he liked it.

Well, my bf’s girl called the next day, and said it was an accident. Yeah right. Then her godforsaken mother called my bf, and said she needed money, because they had to put Snowball down. Nerve of her. Put the pipe down, you worthless (can’t print what I really think of them).

The middle one told her daddy that the cops were watching the house, several months ago. This makes me smile :-D

The only thing Marlene Medina cares about is losing her Section 8, welfare, WIC, and food stamps.

You’re right. I believe that you need to have at least one kid to be on Section 8 if you go w/the plan where you don’t have to work. Eventually, they do push you to return to work. I don’t know what timetable pushes the person living rent free back to work.

Because of her drug addiction, she was granted SSDI in 6 months, years ago. My bf had to fight 10 years, and he has spinal stenosis and fused disks. I’m still waiting. I cleaned the house as thorougly as possible, and the disks in my neck moved around, so ouch!

She has the 3 kids, one who apparently became bi-polar. Not a scam with her, she lived with us for a while. I think mom rips off her check, besides the rent she pays them. There are strict rules for living in section 8, and you are subject to unnanounced visits. They already failed one inspection, but I personally think the landlord is responsible for paint.

They get a lot of money. Gee guess it pays to be a f*ck up :( The cops know what’s going on, so we’re going to sit and wait.

Independent students in my university would hang out at the Student Union, sip coffee, and eschew the frat. But it wasn't like this. Article comes from Audrey Ignatof who wrote a book on Terri.

It is a reminder that we can slap down evil, but it pops up again and again.

There are evil forces in the world today that rally against life, and these forces are not strangers to our nation's colleges. We just have to look at Princeton University to find the evil teachings of Peter Singer since 1999. He is in the habit of taking students to hospitals to see infants with low chances of survival in order to convince them that they should be allowed to die. Convincing students that some lives are not important can go a long way in desensitizing their attitudes towards the value of life. Apparently this philosophy is catching on around college campuses, possibly producing a generation of uncaring and callous individuals.

In the case of Gary DeVercelly, students who knew that he was in trouble after he passed out, waited almost an hour to call Campus Security that was right next door to the Phi Kappa Tau house. Yet, there was "Shock and Awe" at the indictments of students and administrators. The indictment of administrators in a hazing incident is unprecedented, but isn't it about time? There was clear evidence of hard drinking in the fraternity because the bottles of vodka were in plain sight on the windowsills for anyone to see. Certainly, members of the staff such as the Director of Greek Life, the Dean of Students, Campus Security, and many others, should have noticed this. Even the Pub at Rider doesn't serve hard liquor, so why was it tolerated at a fraternity on Rider's premises? And, didn't the Director of Greek Life know what the fraternity initiations were all about, and that they involved extreme drinking that could result in health care emergencies, and even death? Clearly, the administration should be selling an education (in the amount of $32,000 per year for tuition, room, and board) that is not only academically excellent, but socially rewarding and safe!

The devil comes to college

This article goes more into detail at what sort of inhabits the brain of such a creature as the mom from hell.

..................................

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- In the eyes of police, Marlene Medina is an emotionally detached psychopath -- someone who could joke about bad jailhouse food and scoff at how she'll only spend a few years in jail for the beating death of her baby daughter.

"Manslaughter, that's not too bad. I'll be out in three to five," Ms. Medina allegedly told cops after learning that she'd only be facing second-degree manslaughter charges for the death of 20-month-old Hailey Gonzalez, Assistant District Attorney Joanne Grippo said in Stapleton Criminal Court yesterday.

The comments came to light as Ms. Medina, 24, and her boy friend, Edwin Garcia, 30, were arraigned on new charges yesterday -- second-degree manslaughter for Ms. Medina, and second-degree murder for Garcia.

And a police source said the two were "kibitzing" in the courtroom lockup about the quality of the food in jail.

"She's a psychopath," the source said. "They made these comments in earshot of police personnel."

Another case, a yet unnamed innocent faces death by fiat.

................................

The Wisconsin Right to Life organization weighed in Wednesday on a court case that seeks to end life-sustaining treatment for a La Crosse woman who must be kept sedated to keep her on a feeding tube.

Terry Davis, a Sparta, Wis., attorney representing the organization with Richard Esenberg of Milwaukee, filed court documents Wednesday calling for the case to be dismissed.

The documents state that since the woman is not in a persistent vegetative state, the Wisconsin Supreme Court has ruled a guardian cannot withdraw life-sustaining treatment without an advance directive or other statement clearly expressing the patient’s wishes.

The woman, in her 50s, did not leave an advance directive. She developed violent dementia after several strokes, and has refused food and removed her feeding tube in the past.

The only way to maintain the feeding tube is to keep her sedated at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center.

Robyn Shapiro, attorney for the woman’s guardian and family, argued at a La Crosse County court hearing Tuesday the woman’s condition is “functionally equivalent” to persistent vegetative state and she has medical testimony supporting her position.

La Crosse County Circuit Judge Scott Horne said then he was skeptical of Shapiro’s argument but added that Shapiro’s amended petition mentioned the woman had commented she didn’t want to live like Terri Schiavo, which could indicate her wishes.

Schiavo was a 41-year-old brain-damaged Florida woman who became the centerpiece of a national right-to-die battle. She died in March 2005 two weeks after her feeding tube was removed.

In the court documents filed Wednesday, Davis argued Shapiro’s petition only was filed to set up a test case for appeal to the state Supreme Court. It claims Shapiro is a well-known advocate for expanding the circumstances under which medical treatment can be withdrawn.

Expanding those circumstances creates “intractable ethical issues and has far-reaching implications for the way in which treatment will be provided and diagnoses will be made,” the Wisconsin Right to Life court documents contend......................

Could it be the procedure was not meant to be helpful to Terri but to be helpful to Mikey? Shucks, I just wonder...

Terri Schiavo, who died in 2005 after being taken off water and food at her husband's request, received electrode implants but they were not successful, according to The Inquirer. Some experts believe the electrodes were placed too early after her collapse to be helpful to Terri Schiavo.

This might apply if one would expect no other motive than what was best for Terri. But it is a nice thought from the National Catholic Register anyway, with a little probing, too.

.....................................

CLEVELAND, Ohio (National Catholic Register) – Had Terri Schiavo lived another 28 months, the latest medical breakthrough may have bolstered the hopes of those who defended her life.

A group of surgeons have restored the consciousness of a man who was in a coma-like “minimally conscious state” for six years, unable to feed himself or communicate. An article in the scientific journal Nature describes the work of a research team, led by Dr. Ali Rezai, director of the Center for Neurological Restoration at the Cleveland Clinic.

~Snip~

“We believe we’ve presented evidence that we can bring about recovery from severe brain injury,” Giacino said. “This man was six years post injury, and that really gives us good cause for optimism. It says we can alter the course of recovery, and we can do it late.”

Though the breakthrough raises questions about Schiavo – whose brain injury caused worldwide debate when her husband demanded that doctors remove tubes that were providing nutrition and hydration, Giacino said his patient’s circumstances were different than Schiavo’s.

Much of the distinction between Schiavo and the study patient involves a gray area that separates patients in what’s known medically as a “vegetative” state and a “minimally conscious” state. Neither condition is a coma, which involves complete unconsciousness and seldom lasts more than four weeks.

Giacino led the Aspen Neurobehavioral Conference Workshop, in which a group of doctors defined the “minimally conscious” condition in 1997, which became a diagnostic term with peer-reviewed publication in 2002. Giacino said his study patient was clearly in a “minimally conscious” state, while it remains unclear to him whether Schiavo was “minimally conscious” or “vegetative.”

“I don’t know what state Terri Schiavo was in, to be honest, because we did not have enough information before she died,” Giacino said.

Though Schiavo left no living will, Michael Schiavo, insisted he recalled conversations that made it clear the woman would never want the assistance of medically-delivered water and food.

Michael Schiavo chose neurologist Ronald Cranford to examine his wife and testify in court that the she was in a “permanent vegetative state.” Cranford, a right-to-die activist, is a member of the board of directors of the Choice in Dying Society and was a speaker at the 1992 national conference of the Hemlock Society, known today as End of Life Choices.

Though Cranford insisted Schiavo was permanently vegetative, William Hammesfahr, a Florida neurologist who spent 10 hours observing Schiavo, insisted she was in a minimally conscious state – just like the patient in the electrode study. She died March 31. 2005.

Even if Hammesfahr was correct, said Giacino, Terri Schiavo wouldn’t have benefited from electrodes at this time because her injury wasn’t caused by blunt trauma. Rather, he said, Schiavo’s injury involved oxygen deprivation resulting from a heart attack.

“At this stage, this procedure will not help patients suffering from anoxic (oxygen deprivation) injuries,” Giacino said. “We can conceive that in the future we may be able to go down the ladder, to include people with other conditions. But for this study, we were looking for someone who met a very specific set of criteria and I know from Terri Schiavo’s autopsy report that she would not have met those and the electrode wouldn’t have helped.”

Fins, of Weill Medical College of Cornell University, said Schiavo was part of a deep-brain implant study in the early 1990s, conducted on about 50 patients, and it failed.

“It didn’t help her because she wasn’t minimally conscious, she was vegetative,” Fins said. “Our study involves a population in a different brain state, which was identified and defined by Dr. Giacino’s group.”
