I-Team: Exclusive Sneak Peak at McCarran’s Terminal 3
Aug 23, 2007 08:22 PM EDT
More than 43 million travelers passed through McCarran International Airport in 2006 — the vast majority in Terminal 1. Work has already begun on a third terminal designed to ease congestion and to keep up with growth.
Terminal 3, as it’s called, is not scheduled to open until 2012. But anyone who’s spent any time near the airport lately knows preliminary work on the new facility is well underway. You may have seen the contruction, but you haven’t seen the design — until now.
The computer animation video of Terminal 3 was provided to Eyewitness News exclusively by McCarran International Airport.
The front door of the building will essentially sit where old Russell Road and Maryland Parkway used to intersect.
The facility will house fourteen gates, its own ticket counters, baggage claim and security areas. The $1.8 billion building will also have shopping and dining options and a multi-level parking garage.
Though it will connect to Terminal 1 through the D-gates, Terminal 3 is designed to be a standalone facility.
The new building will also accomodate international flights expanding international air service at McCarran, according to officials there.
Still a few years away, the new terminal is scheduled to open in 2012.
