Did you see ‘The Fog of War’? McNamara swears that he and JFK were planning to pull out of Vietnam.
Whatever they intended is irrelevant. The Diems were assassinated only a few weeks before the Diem Brothers. That caused a mess that they eventually would have had to deal with. The coup destabilized the regime and the generals were unable to rule the country. Besides, imho, I think that the war broke McNamara, and he might actually believe that. Of course, timing would have been everything. The Vietnamese government might have survived until after Kennedy’s re-election in 1964. But that re-election would have been based in large part on Kennedy’s “strong” stand on Cuba in October, 1962. Goldwater would have been his opponent in 1964 and a Communist takeover during JFK’s second term would have led to a Republican victory in 1968. Funny thing is that it might have been Goldwater.
He and Kennedy were friends and so the campaign in 1964 would have been far more amiable. Barry wouldn’t have been portrayed as this trigger-happy crazy.
The most amazing thing about America is that its populace has always been devout while its leadership in almost every field has not.
