Cancer is a thief. As it stole my mother, and tried to take my father and sister, it also tried to rob them of their strength and dignity. Most who get it decide to suffer privately, as it hurts too much to even talk about. But White House spokesman Tony Snow is not like most.
Maybe it is because he is facing his colon cancer a second time — he is like other survivors, tough and brave.
We have see him almost daily, losing hair to chemotherapy, but not his cheekiness as he answers questions from reporters at the White House. And though it is his job to put the right spin on the president’s policies, there is no spin in what he says tonight on NBC Nightly News. No, he allows himself to be seen in vulnerable moments, even as he gets a chemotherapy treatment in an exclusive and intimate interview with our own David Gregory. (Editor’s note: The entire interview will be available on our Web site, Nightly.MSNBC.com, and linked here at 6:30 ET.)
Especially in these times we live in, it is helpful for all of us to see another human being so publicly show us it is possible to rise above fears, and find the strength to face uncertainty.
David and his producers Alicia Jennings, Antoine Sanfuentes and Kerri Forrest bring us something lovely and useful tonight, a glimpse deep into human dignity and courage.
Thanks for the reminder.
It is the only thing that could get me to watch NBC news.
Bye
