PITTSBURGH (AP) - A newspaper reporter who said Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick would have been "better off raping a woman" than being charged with dogfighting has apologized.

Paul Zeise (ZICE) also will no longer appear on the sports TV talk show where he made the remark.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter made the comments Sunday night on the "Sports Showdown" show on KDKA-TV, a CBS affiliate. He was disagreeing with another panelist who said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell should suspend Vick for the rest of the season.

Zeise said "It's really a sad day in this country when somehow ... Michael Vick would have been better off raping a woman if you look at the outcry of what happened. Had he done that, he probably would have been suspended for four games and he'd be back on the field."

While the comment may of been in bad taste, he was trying to raise a point about how animal lovers have totally shifted the discussion.

Either way, he should be banned from the NFL and sent to prison.

Since when does one have to apologize for the truth?

If Zeise had merely worded it differently - "Vick would probably be in less trouble for raping a woman" - he'd still be employed right now. His use of the phrase "would have been better off" did him in.

What discussion did they shift?

I completely disagree with the guy. Apples to oranges comparison. Maybe even apples to orangutans comparison. Not even close.

In a rape case, it is a he said/she said thing....nobody is there to see or hear. With dogfighting, we know the dogs never consented to agree to be torn apart.

Terrible analogy.

How did they “shift” the discussion?

No punishment is too harsh for Vick; this is what I hear from everyone I talk to.

to me, the outrage is strong (and necessary), but the outrage when a basketball player assaulted a woman, or having gunfights outside of strip clubs - seem to be taken with less outraged.

And when those who can’t speak out (children, animals, elderly) we as society need to speak for them
.

He must have meant "black woman".

Or even worse - if an athlete is accused of raping a black prostitute.

That is absolutely horrendous.

Each time I see pictures like that, I can’t help but hope that something very bad happens to Vick.

Ted Kennedy leaves a girl to suffocate and later supports abortion on demand and is referred to in the LameStreamMedia as "the lion of the Senate."

Maybe Vick should open a chain of abortion clinics and see his popularity skyrocket.

Wow! Talk about being politicaly correct! The Thought Police are out to get ya, however if you are a minority or a woman they give you more lienency...I would be willing to bet the guy who said this is WHITE.

The frequency with which criminal behavior occurs with some of these athletes has desensitized a lot of people to it. Vick just had a ‘unique’ (I say that with sarcasm) way of expressing his degenerate side so the desensitization has not set in in the general populace. That said, saying someone would be better off raping a woman is just plain wrong.

I love animals and dogs are our best friends. I guess the studies are fairly firm on the fact that if you treat an animal like this, you’d treat another human being pretty badly too. Vick is sick.

That’s a horrible picture. Shows the reality of what this guy was doing.

I feel the same, but know with almost absolute certainty that his celebrity status will ensure that he receives little more than a slap on the wrist. What would happen to you or me if we had our third DUI? We wouldn’t see the light of day for years. Same is true if we were stopped for speeding and had drugs in our car. But, because our dad is an ex-VP of the country or perhaps I’m an actress, I get a slap on the wrist and walk away. Vick’s punishment should reflect his crime...nothing more, nothing less...regardless of his celebrity status.
