(Updated story)

Police say the Spotsylvania woman chased down her domestic partner with a gun this morning. The suspect is a Pentagon Police officer.

__

A Pentagon police officer was arrested today on three charges, including attempted murder.

Natalie Howard, 39, was charged with attempted murder, assault and battery, and brandishing a firearm, said Spotsylvania Sheriff Howard Smith.

She will be held in Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.

The arrest was made by Anne Arundel County, Md., police, who were able to arrest Howard after Spotsylvania police traced a phone call with her.

She spent about four hours talking to Spotsylvania crisis negotiators throughout the day.

Smith said an altercation began about 7:45 this morning with a domestic dispute between Howard and her female partner, who live together in Spotsylvania.

The victim said she had been chased down Stone Meadow Drive, the road the couple lives on, with a .40 caliber gun, Smith said.

The victim told police she then got away and Howard got in her vehicle and left.

Police say Howard, who has worked for Pentagon Police for seven years, was also carrying a weapon.

Until mid-afternoon today, the victim was still inside the house at 5609 Stone Meadow Drive and the house was surrounded by police cars, both of the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office and Pentagon Police Department.

The two agencies worked together at the scene, said Lt. Eddie Peck of the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office.

A neighbor of Howard's and her partner said she always just thought the couple were quiet and kept to themselves.

The neighbor, Vernetta Evans, a sergeant who works for the Dumfries Police Department, said the couple were good neighbors the whole 18 months she’d lived next door, but that she never had much contact with them.

Howard, who has worked for Pentagon Police for seven years, is thought to be driving a red Toyota Camry somewhere in Northern Virginia, Smith said.

She is also suspected to still be carrying the weapon.

Smith said Spotsylvania crisis negotiators spent more than three hours talking to Howard on the phone throughout the day, in fear that she would harm herself. He said police departments across Northern Virginia are on the lookout.

“We sent out a statewide broadcast and we have a lot of resources out there,” he said. “Hopefully we can pick her up before she does any harm to herself.”

Smith said he does not consider Howard armed and dangerous to anyone but herself at this time.

Geeze, the boys and girls at the puzzle palace must be feeling a little nervous.

Is this a failure of the don’t ask don’t tell or can we just lay this off on Rummy, Bush and Cheney?

My first thought was the DADT policy.

The foxes guarding the hen house.

(Well, they’re probably not foxes.)

Guns, carpets and domestic partners - a bad combination.

I'm surprised she could chase - most of the Pentagon Police officers look like they spend a lot of time at the donut counter.

i’m confused. attempted murder? did she fire the gun at her partner? chasing someone with a gun is not attempted murder.

the order of these sentences would seem to dispute that. perhaps sloppy writing... you're probably right.

The writing was horrible, sub high school level. It forces one to sort of interpret what happened.

It is amazing how often I read gibberish written by supposed journalism majors.
