Last year I made my first garden.
I grew a lot of butternut squash. I did it in part to prove I could keep it the basemment of this suburban house I live in now.

It kept well into March. It was not a lot...but I just wanted to know that I could do it. I have relatives who were farmers and I listened to what they had said about keeping things in cool places.

I think our country is overly wasteful and too willing for disposeable everything.

You had a Victory Garden. I don’t think most people are overly concerned about their food supply, if they were we wouldn’t be in the pickle we are in now. It’s all part of an instant gratification, live for the moment mentality that has permeated our culture. You grew your own, and it took time. Imagine the average Americans willingness to wait for the right moment to plan, then to nurture and finally to harvest. Not there anymore.
Good for you. By the way, my favorite way to cook butternut squash is baked with brown sugar and just a dab of butter.

What I do to plants is considered murder in most jurisdictions.
