Short barrel rifle for concealed carry? (vanity)
August 2, 2007 | Papertyger

Here's a hypothetical for FReepers to bat around.

With the ubiquity of backpacks these days, what is the feasability and advisability of carrying one of the many high capacity, short barreled rifles as a concealed weapon.

For our purposes, assume NFA compliance and fees are no object.

How short? Short enough to pass for a wooden leg?

Depends on the state. Here in Florida I think you are limited to only handguns. However I think a Tec 9, micro Uzi or Mac series is excluded even though they are registered as a handgun on the 4473.

Depends on where you are and what your doing. Seems like an awkward way of CCW, and slow to boot, but once you got it out it sure would give you an advantage.

A rifle with a folding stock would probably work.

To be a non-NFA rifle it has to have a 16” barrel and an overall length of 26”. Kinda hard to conceal.

I’ve thought about buying an 11” barrel for one of my AR-15s. Just not sure if I want to do the whole background, fingerprint & $200 fee thing.

Probably would be no advantage. The short barrel of a pistol allows you to place the front sight on the target much faster than a rifle of any length.

I would go with (as usual) a .45 semiauto or revolver.

I find by not concealing mine... it saves me a lot of ammo!

I would also check with your lawyer on the subject of tort suits that might be coming your way if you ever used it.

Usually they are largish handguns with folding or retractable stock for improved accuracy.

Mac 10/11, TP9, Hk P90, et al.

As a concealed carry? I wouldn't. By the time you got it out and aimed you'd be dead several times over.

I have this AK47 clone "pistol". It's a blast to shoot but unwieldy. It just begs for a handle drop down from the front. Just don't do it though.
