PITTSBURGH A newspaper reporter who said Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick would have been "better off raping a woman" than being charged with dogfighting has apologized and will no longer appear on the local sports panel TV show where he made the remark.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Paul Zeise made the comments Sunday night on the "Sports Showdown" show on KDKA-TV, a CBS affiliate. He was disagreeing with another panelist who said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell should suspend Vick for the rest of the season because he was indicted on federal dogfighting charges July 17.
"It's really a sad day in this country when somehow ... Michael Vick would have been better off raping a woman if you look at the outcry of what happened," Zeise said. "Had he done that, he probably would have been suspended for four games and he'd be back on the field. But because this has become a political issue, all of a sudden the commissioner has lost his stomach for it."
Zeise apologized Monday.
"I regret the poor choice of analogies I used to characterize a professional athlete's legal situation," Zeise said.

Monumental dimwit moment.
How so? He really would have been better off if he were accused by a women of rape. Hell, he would probably still be playing, depending on what kind of woman made the accusation. I'm not saying that's a good thing, that's just how it is.
It’s like what Newt said about Detroit. Painful but so true. I already said he’ll probably get more time than a pedophile.
He has a point. Kolbe got over the rape charge, but this dog fighting charge is gonna doom Vick. Of course, the merits of the rape charge were always much more in question than these charges against Vick, but still if it was 'just' rape, Vick would stand a better chance at coming back. I don't understand it, but that is the truth.
Monumental dimwit moment.
Not really. I’ve heard reporters and news people make the same point many times in the past twenty years. They are on the front lines to compare the public reaction to one verses the other. They are appalled at the difference.
No, it's an astute observation.
It is with interesting irony that the exact same political correctness the reporter was attempting to point out was the same pc that got him suspended from the show.
No, it's an astute observation.
Yep, but since it's not politically correct, the sports writer is forced to grovel like a Michael Vick whipped dog.
Sad, but it is true. There seems to be more outrage with the “victims” of Vicks case than OJ’s case.
His statement is sad but true. There are certain truths that cannot be uttered in the new amerika.
And of course no one would have batted an eye or even reported it, had Michael V. asked his baby’s momma to abort his child. That’s nothing compared to killing a dog. (extreme sarcasm)
how so? Are we so cowed in today's society, that the truth is not to be uttered in the public forum?
Somewhere, our forefathers are weeping.
It is obvious the dim-witted reporter knows nothing about peoples’ reactions to any animal abuse story. It really riles folks up, and rightfully so. I don’t like anyone who abuses animals, or abuses other people either! Vick is still innocent until proven guilty, and I hope, for his sake, it is so. We will all see the truth of the charges later, but for now I’m still comparing these charges against him with the bogus charges filed against Scooter Libby. In other words, I do not trust the Justice Department at all. Could Vick be a “Nifonging victim”?
Sounds like the comment Limbaugh made about McNabb.
