U.S. Embassy Nouakchott issued the following Warden Message on August 22:

The U.S. Embassy has received reports of planned activities such as kidnapping by Al-Qaeda in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). American citizens are, therefore, urged to heighten their awareness and use caution. American citizens should take increased security precautions when in their homes or cars and watch for any suspicious or unusual activity.

American citizens are also urged to register with the U.S. Embassy. They can do so in person or at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/ .
