The Bay Bridge collapse wasn't all that serious -- for the reasons you mentioned.
The bigger catastrophe in that earthquake was the collapse of the elevated section of the Nimitz Freeway -- where one roadway ran on top of the elevated section over another one.

Exactly what I said. The Cypress Structure was a two level section of freeway that was jam packed with commuters. We lived there in ‘89 and I’m happy we are out of there.
