I received an e-mail today from the Fox News producer who booked me for the O'Reilly Factor last night. The links have been forwarded to Jim Robinson for review.

Jim asked me to start a thread with the links so that Freepers, and everyone else, could see for themselves what the fuss is about.

The Hillary Clinton stray bullet assassination comment was a very bad joke comment that someone posted two days ago. It was flagged last night after the O'Reilly Factor broadcast and was removed by a moderator. It is available for the time being in Google cache:

Don't even bother trying to defend that one. Assassination jokes have no place on Free Republic. Yes, Cindy Sheehan has written of her fantasizies about killing President Bush--and she's not joking, but that's her problem. We're better than that.

The "homosexuals are dogs" comment is taken out of context. The actual quote is "Homosexuals are the modern day dogs in the manger." That was in reference to an article about proprieters in the U.K. not being allowed to deny hotel accomodations to homosexual couples on account of religious belief.

The American Heritage online dictionary gives this description for the phrase: dog in the manger, NOUN: Inflected forms: pl. dogs in the manger. One who prevents others from enjoying what one has no use for oneself. ETYMOLOGY: From a fable in which a dog prevented an ox from eating hay he did not want himself.

That comment was posted two days ago and has also been removed by the moderators. It is available for now in Google cache.

The "I hate blacks" comment was nowhere to be found in the other threads referenced.

The threads are about crime in the black community, gangsta culture and Jesse Jackson. Two of the threads are in the Smoky Backroom.

Suggestion. Can someone install a filter that does not REMOVE comments which might be offensive, but which can automatically detects certain keywords that are known to be offensive, and can automatically flag these for moderator review?

What *are* those "offensive" keywords? See, here's the thing. Who determines what the aforementioned keywords are to be? Are we to host a list of them somewhere on this site so as to help us avoid them? It's about more than certain letter groupings that a software program may flag - and BTW, sites that employ automatic filtering look amateurish as they nix innocent words containing such banned letter strings. It's insulting to the posters who must try to communicate in spite of such idiotic bots. Frankly, FReepers apply enough self-restraint on the whole as to make a cussword killer bot unnecessary.

(I say that as someone who frequents FR often from work with little fear of my employer's net nanny bot finding a word on The List [insert your preferred sound effect of doom here] and banning the entire FreeRepublic.com domain forthwith and forever. I've gone so far as to thank a Mod for leaving up a troll's post for ridicule after altering the cusswords that would provoke the net nanny to zot my connection. Hey, I can be hard up for entertainment on the clock!)

This current flap has nothing to do with naughty words. Rather, it's about ideas. How in the world is software supposed to hex ideas??? That's what the Report Abuse button is for. If a Mod doesn't come across the offending idea, it get reported by FReepers who do see it. Obvious trolls and persistently flaming posters earn a banning or a timeout, and IMHO the system works.

Now that we have bought into O'Reilly's premise and need to play whack-a-mole for every post on Free Republic, some very gray areas present themselves.

O'Reilly called Ward Churchill a "traitor". Someone posting on FR might opine, "The US needs to start treating traitors the way we treated them before the 1960's. --- Ward Churchill is a traitor --- Ward Churchill should suffer the same punishment that George Washington ordered for Benedict Arnold and Major Andre."

If such a comment is "hate speech", then George Washington is guilty of a "hate crime" for ordering the execution of Benedict Arnold. If the idea "traitors should be executed or otherwise prosecuted severely" is something that should be banned, then we will never be able to reclaim the necessary attitude that can save this country.
