WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senate Democrats on Wednesday threatened to block Republicans from forcing a vote on a Mississippi judge in a new fight in the well-trod arena of judicial confirmations.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he would move to kill the Republicans' symbolic resolution calling for a vote of the full Senate on the appeals court nomination of Leslie Southwick of Mississippi.
The motion could come as early as Thursday. Democratic leaders wanted to wait to see if the nomination survived a Thursday session of the Senate Judiciary Committee, several officials said.
Republicans said any vote on Southwick's nomination, even a procedural one such as Reid's, would put senators on record on whether President Bush's nominees should receive up-or-down confirmation votes by the full Senate.
Bush nominated Southwick to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, which serves Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.
Democrats have concerns about Southwick's writing in several cases. Southwick was a judge on the Mississippi Court of Appeals.

Then, McConnell should tell the Dummies that he wants them all up for a vote of the full Senate or the Republicans will filibuster every single bill that comes before the Senate — no exceptions.
I don’t know if it would work, but it would sure be fun to watch the temper tantrum.

Voinevich, he’s not really sure where he’s at, but he’s definitely not going to be intimidated.
Apparently Reid has already figured out how to get around that- he’s stated he will adjourn the senate when they return- and then start up again, effectively erasing any recess appointments. I don’t know if that would work, but he seems to think it will.
Republicans lost control of the Senate, and some of the 14 probably were not re-elected.....DeWine for example.
That could/would work if.....the RINOs held the line.

Well, McConnell is already playing the filibuster card; 1 of every 6 rollcall votes in this session’s Senate has been a cloture vote, which puts this session on pace to demolish the record for cloture votes in a single session. He’s even holding up legislation already approved by the Senate (96-2 vote, in one case) by refusing to name GOP Senators to the House/Senate conference committee that must resolve difference between the two versions of the bill.
I don’t think McConnell has all that much parliamentary ammunition left.

Well, Lincoln Chafee and Mike DeWine were voted out of office. So that makes it a Gang of 11, unless new members joined.
