I'm not going to call Bill O'Reilly a liar... yet, but... on his TV show today, he read off a laundry list of ridiculous "hate" statements like "I hate blacks," "Hillary should be assassinated" and "homosexuals are dogs" that he said he personally found on Free Republic and claims that they were posted here today. I do not believe that. I doubt that he personally logged on to FR and I doubt he found any such thing posted here today.
Who knows what we may have missed and is buried deep in our archives of millions of posts, but our readers do a pretty good job of alerting us to anything out of bounds that is posted and we pull it. Also, one of our readers found a couple of the quotes he alleges, and if they are the ones O'Reilly is complaining about, he took them way out of context. They were simply quotes in the articles posted not statements posted by FReepers.
As soon as he provides me a list of the alleged posts and their URLs, I'll believe him. If he doesn't... then... well, guess he'll deserve to be known as what he is.

Thats what I see. On a site this big there is bound to be a few vitriolic post. I mean how many post are there here? A million, millions? He is using the tactic of some group like the SPLC to try and broadly paint this site into a corner. You can't come to this site everyday even if you don't see every post and not know the tenor of the site. Sure people get heated sometimes after all it is politics. But a hate site in the sense of constantly using racial epithets and calling for violence is not here. I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't some type of ulterior motive here.
He fancies himself a populist. An every man’s man. Telling it like it is, no matter who it offends. In the Huey Long tradition. He forgot one thing. No one cares what he thinks, no one listens to what he says, and no one is going to follow his advice just because he gives it. All he’s left with is a message for no one. Night after night. Sorta like Keith Olberman. Who the hell cares what his opinion is?

The ground rules are pretty well upfront. I haven’t seen a gratuitously racist post last longer than about ten minutes. If BOR has a case, it’s probably from Opposition Research types caching FR posts every other minute.
His rhetorical (and legal) legs are thinner than a stork’s.

While BOR is wrong about what is allowed here on FR, the insults from FReepers about HIM must have ticked him off. He referred to seeing some of them. I have never seen racist hate-filled posts like what he mentioned that ever lasted more than a couple of minutes. And that happened only once or twice in the years I have been around. The mods and the FReepers police the site very effectively. However, it is commonplace to see insults to BOR go unchecked. It is a critique of his show and he should take note.
Kristinn did a good job representing FR. Good luck to you both in handling this insult to FR.
JR, BOR does not know the difference between a thread (posted article) and a posted response from a Freeper. He is obviously unfamiliar with the format here.

I have been a poster in the FreeRepublic.com **Internet forum** for years
and do not recall something of the offensive nature and extent as, “I hate
blacks.”
I have found many insults of those who are an insult to America, even ones
that go beyond decency, but that is the way of an Internet forum. And I
have found many removed posts. Look at forums on any topic in just about
any Web site that holds them and you will be educated about the nature of
an Internet forum.
The burden of proof is on O’Reilly to substantiate his claims that today posters posted the comments he quoted.
Otherwise, you seem to be advocating something along the lines of fake but accurate.
I saw Bill O’Reilly’s comments tonight. What rubbish.

Exactly right, BOR is not familiar with the format, and does not know the difference between an article and a comment. That in itself would have been a simple mistake, had he not claimed to know the site. He obviously doesn’t, and should have made it his business to know that, before he aired anything
They are and I applaud that. But if there was any hate speach about the government on Moveon or Cindy Sheloser do you think they would moderate that kind of speech? No they would not. The people that run Freerepublic should tell Bill O Reilly to kiss their ass. This website is run very responsibly and fair. Maybe Bill should learn about fair and ballanced here.
More than likely, and certainly plausible.
However, if action is taken, there’s this neat little thing called “discovery”, whereupon FR merely reveals their server logs to counsel.
It’ll never make it to trial. FNC owes FR bigtime, if JR could sew its case shut tightly.
