Members of Congress recently under scrutiny by federal authorities: ___

Senate Republicans:

_Ted Stevens of Alaska, sixth term. Stevens is under a federal investigation for his relationship with Bill Allen, an oil field services contractor who was convicted this year of bribing state lawmakers. Agents from the FBI and Internal Revenue Service searched the senator's Alaska home on Monday.

___

House Republicans:

_Don Young of Alaska, 18th term. Young is under federal investigation as part of an ongoing corruption probe, according to a federal law enforcement official. Part of the Young investigation involves his campaign finance practices.

_John Doolittle of California, ninth term. The FBI in April searched his home in Oakton, Va., where his wife Julie ran a bookkeeping and event-planning business. Among her clients was now-jailed GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

_Jerry Lewis of California, 15th term. Prosecutors are examining his dealings with lobbyists and contractors during the time he chaired the House Appropriations Committee.

_Gary Miller of California, fifth term. FBI agents have interviewed officials in two towns that purchased property from Miller about the nature of the transactions and the tax implications. Miller denies any wrongdoing and says FBI agents have not contacted him.

_Rick Renzi of Arizona, third term. FBI agents recently raided his wife's insurance business amid reports that Renzi paid substantial back taxes to settle charges that his businesses improperly paid for his first congressional campaign.

___

House Democrats:

_William J. Jefferson of Louisiana, ninth term. Awaiting trial in January on federal charges of taking more than $500,000 in bribes by using his office to broker business deals in Africa. He pleaded innocent in June to the 16-count indictment. FBI agents raided his congressional office and his home, where they found $90,000 in a freezer.

_Alan Mollohan of West Virginia, 13th term. Mollohan stepped down from the House ethics committee after federal agents began a probe of federal funds he helped steer to nonprofit groups he founded.

There are 2000 FBI investigations of politicians now. The rest must be State and local.

Is it interesting that they put the minority party first?

If they can just get enough evidence against Ted “Bridge to Nowhere” Stevens to get an indictment, that would be too sweet. Getting rid of his sorry old ass would be addition by subtraction for the Republicans and America.

Couple of glaring omissions in the unseen “senate democrat” category...

It is definitely busy, and widespread unfortunately.

There is one big D’turd out here in California, Don PeRATa that has been under investigation for almost 3 years, . I hope it makes it to a Grand Jury soon.

I hope it isn’t a growing trend because we don’t need to go down that Mexico or Zimbabwe road of corruption.

This can't be!!   More Republicans under Federal investigation than Democrats??  I thought the Bush Administration was politicizing the Justice Department.

(At least that's what the media keeps telling me...)

All encumbents. All are dirty, I know it. These are just the saps that are getting caught.

It would be extremely naive to think that these are the only corrupt members of Congress or even the most corrupt. Considering the political difficulties in going after members of this elite club of above-the-law egotist, many will never be held accountable.

The interesting thing about this list is that all but one of the Congresscritters under investigation have been in office at least a decade—Stevens and Young both over 36 years, Lewis over 30 years, and Mollohan over 26 years, for instance. There’s a bit of a “chicken or the egg” question on these things. Are they corrupt because they have been in office for so long, or have they been able to stay in office for so long because they are corrupt? Either way, the bottom line is that they should be gone ASAP.

Term limits.

Kick their asses out before they become comfortable enough to get in trouble.

Two terms in the Senate, three terms in the House. Consecutive or not, once you’ve done your time, out you go.

We also need to put a big spike in the congressional retirement plan.

IMHO, public service should not be an automatic path to becoming rich.

What did happen to the Harry Reid corruption charges in Nevada?? It seems there were some serious real estate matters, and others, I believe. If they were just local in nature, they should have caused Senate ethics charges to follow.

Anyone know what’s going on, or does Harry get a free pass from Free Republic?

Is Free Republic just some barber shop story swapping society, or do the members get off their glatimus maximus to make phone calls, write opinion articles, letters to the letter, etc.?

just curious?
