U.S. wants to create implantable biochip

CLEMSON, S.C., July 30 (UPI) -- The U.S. Department of Defense awarded Clemson University a $1.6 million contract for implantable biochip research.

The award given the university's Center for Bioelectronics, Biosensors and Biochips is for an implantable biochip that can relay vital health information if a soldier is wounded in battle or a civilian is hurt in an accident.

The biochip, about the size of a grain of rice, is to be designed to measure and relay such information as blood lactate and glucose levels in the event of a major hemorrhage.

Professor Anthony Guiseppi-Elie, the center's director, said the biochip device has other potential applications, such as monitoring astronauts' vital signs during space flights.

"We now lose a large percentage of patients to bleeding and getting vital information such as how much oxygen is in the tissue back to ER physicians and medical personnel can often mean the difference between life and death," he said. "Our goal is to improve the quality and expediency of care for fallen soldiers and civilian trauma victims."

The biochip also might be injected as a precautionary measure in anticipation of future traumas, he said.

I don’t like that one — perhaps for soldier’s in battle, but not for the public. Way too much chance for abuse.

I’m a major technophile, but something about the government using tax dollars to find a way to chip its citizens is a little eerie...

I wonder if they'll put it in the right hand or on the forehead?

Medical data? Why stop there. Why don’t we just put our SSN number on it too. It’s only a 9 digit number, it won’t take up too much extra space.

Then we can link that to our bank accounts. We won’t have to carry cash or cards so no reason to mug people anymore.

Then stores can get new cash registers that scan the chip and withdraw your money. No worries about employees shimming the till. Just stop taking cash and cards. If you don’t have the chip you can’t shop.

Really it sounds like a good idea....

...perhaps for soldier’s in battle, but not for the public.

Agreed. Best application I've heard for it is avoiding friendly fire incidents.

And if your a bad citizen (or deemed to be) we just deprogram the chip and you are SOL.

I don’t see how it would help with friendly-fire, I think you’d have to be pretty close, to be able to scan it, besides, what if the bad guys got a hold of some?

And once the code is cracked or stolen, it's a really nifty way to target our soldiers...

This all exists on RFID chips, why are they re-inventing the what is already out there.

Doubtful, I'd think. You'd need a pretty strong transmitter in the chip to read it from any decent distance to avoid a friendly-fire incident. And if you do that, you've suddenly marked the position of every US soldier with a nice RF signal.

“Signs of the times for sure.”

I read that headline too quickly.

I thought it said the “U.S. wants to create implantable hiccup” (need new contacts!).

Might cause someone a problem in a quiet church.

The award given the university’s Center for Bioelectronics, Biosensors and Biochips

***There are already centers on University campuses devoted to this kind of research. We are right around the corner from Revelation Chapter 13.

16He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, 17so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name.

I wonder if they'll put it in the right hand or on the forehead?

That's easy. The answer is "yes".
