ROME (AP) - An Italian appeals court upheld the conviction of five men on international terrorism charges for belonging to a cell that recruited militants to fight in Iraq, news reports said Tuesday. The Milan court confirmed the September 2006 sentences of 10 years in prison for Egyptian El Ayashi Radi, also known as Merai, and Iraqi Muhamad Majid, news agencies ANSA and Apcom reported. The court also upheld sentences of seven years for Housni Jamal, of Morocco, and 5½ years for Ciise Maxamed Cabdullaah, of Somalia. It lowered from seven to six years the prison term for Iraqi Amin Mostafa Mohamed after clearing him of a charge of receiving stolen goods, ANSA said. The cell was believed to have had links to terrorist group Ansar al-Islam, which is based in northern Iraq and has been linked by U.S. authorities to al-Qaida. The suspects were believed to have recruited some 200 militants from around Europe to fight in Iraq. The defendants had denied wrongdoing.

Yet another proof that Al Qaeda has been in Iraq for a long time. In fact Ansar Al Islam the previous name of AL Qaeda was present in Northern Iraq since 2002 with the full knowledge and support of Saddam regime and they came to Iraq under the leadership of dead terrorist Zarqawi.

As you recall the Al Qaeda video that was released this April shows Al Qaeda training in Northern Iraq somewhere between 2002 and early 2003 when Saddam was still in power http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1868301/posts
