death penalty.
STAMFORD, Conn., July 30 — Having committed a string of brazen nighttime burglaries by the age of 22, Joshua Komisarjevsky was facing serious time in a state penitentiary when he stood before Judge James M. Bentivegna in late 2002, with his parents, girlfriend and 9-month-old daughter in the gallery.

But in a move state officials now acknowledge was not made according to proper procedures, Mr. Komisarjevsky was paroled in April 2007. He now could face the death penalty for a brutal home invasion in Cheshire, the very town where he grew up in a storied and prominent family of Russian descent. What appears to have begun as a mirror image of Mr. Komisarjevsky’s earlier burglaries took a gruesome turn: He and another career criminal he met in a Hartford halfway house, Steven J. Hayes, 44, are accused of murdering Jennifer Hawke-Petit, 48, and her daughters, Hayley, 17, and Michaela, 11; sexually assaulting the mother and Michaela; severely beating the father, Dr. William A. Petit Jr., 50; and setting the house on fire.
Gov. M. Jodi Rell has ordered a “top to bottom” review of the criminal justice system to see where it failed, but equally perplexing is the transformation of Mr. Komisarjevsky, who was adopted at 14 days old by a couple who believed they could not have children of their own.

More innocent people killed by the incompetence of government! What is it going to take for the overwhelming majority of people in this country to realize that government cannot doing anything well. The newspaper in my town has run a series of articles on the abject incompetence of everything government tries to run - failed criminal “justice” system, failed school system, failed transportation system, failed immigration enforcement, etc. In response to the articles I have written a letter to the editor suggesting that in light of all of the above that GEICO change its advertisement from “so simple a caveman could do it” to “so simple even the government could do it.”
Oh yeah, that'll fix it.

The fact that the statement I heard the other day, “...we might seek the death penalty...” says it all.
These guys were caught leaving the house in the family’s vehicle, tried to run the police barricade, and were caught.
This SHOULD be a very short trial.
The sentence? These two should be shackled and gagged, taken to a remote location where the men of this family (including extended family) are there to greet them. These men should each be supplied with the following: A baseball bat, a 2’ length of 1/2” iron pipe, an electrical generator, a set of jumper cables, and a dull, rusty kitchen knife.
I'd suggest adding an electric drill and a blow torch.

My 5-year-old son is afraid of the dark and of monsters in his bedroom. I tell him there are no such things as monsters. I know I am shielding him from the truth.
I have been a police officer for 25 years, and I've seen plenty of monsters while working on homicide, sexual assault and pedophile cases. It's probably what led me to go back to school for a master's in theology. I needed the spiritual world because my daily contact with crime had weakened my trust in human beings.
Dr. Scott Peck, the renowned psychiatrist who wrote "People of the Lie," came to the conclusion after years of working with people in therapy that some human beings are born evil and stay that way. Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes are two such people.
As a police officer, I see people like them. I see juries make incredibly poor choices in deciding their fates. I see the same criminals arrested over and over again, only to be let back out on the street. I see rap sheets like theirs, that are 3 and 4 feet long, with many of the charges nolle'd and dismissed. I see charges plea-bargained down because prosecutors are overworked and there are not enough courts and judges to handle cases. And those who are convicted and imprisoned are soon let out because prisons are overcrowded
I too asked where was God when those two monsters beat Dr. William Petit unconscious, strangled his wife, poured gasoline around a terrified 11-year-old little girl and her 17-year-old sister and then lit a match.
I tell my son that monsters don't exist. When he gets older, he will find out that they do indeed walk this earth.

I know what you mean. I too have told my children that monsters don’t exist. When they came of an age where I knew they would understand, I told them the truth. I show them stories like this one as proof.
You are correct, however, in your original assessment of the human species, in that, you began to lose your trust in them. When it comes right down to it, there is only One you can trust, One that is constant and consistent. Humans were bound to fail. Free Will will do that to you. Thank God not all of us humans are animals, like the two mentioned earlier.
I truly believe these two were living in hell. God had turned his face from them. How else can you explain that level of evil?
That said, we all sin. We must pray everyday for Him to have mercy on us and guide us in His ways. Otherwise...

I don't want to know WHAT failed. I want to know WHO failed.
And I want those people put up on charges of accessories to murder and conspiracy as if they'd been in that house with the perps.
Without the systems assistance, these victims would still be alive and untortured. The "system" helped kill and torture them by letting these primitive savages loose when they should have been KILLED for the protection of society.

This horrible case is a result of liberal attitudes that allow scum, as these two pieces of human debris, to roam the streets. With so many felony convictions they should have been declared persistent felons and sentenced to long term sentences. Let’s hope they get the death sentence and the sooner the better.

The “top to bottom” review is specifically designed to prevent the punishment of those responsible for letting these two out. These stories crop up every few years, and nobody is ever punished.
