Alaska Home of Senator Is Raided by U.S. Agents

WASHINGTON, July 30 — The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service raided the Alaska home of Senator Ted Stevens on Monday in search of evidence about his relationship to a businessman who oversaw a remodeling project that almost doubled the size of the senator’s house, federal law enforcement officials said.

The decision to raid the home suggests that the corruption investigation focused on Mr. Stevens, a long-serving Republican and former chairman, has taken on new urgency.

The businessman, Bill J. Allen, the founder of an oil fields service company that has won tens of millions of dollars in federal contracts with the senator’s help, has pleaded guilty to bribing state legislators.

The F.B.I. confirmed that the r

Any legitimate information on this one way or the other?

Doesn’t look good for the re-election campaign at least.

Ted Stevens is the Ted Kennedy of the Republican party, at least when it comes to seniority and respect among colleagues.

I hope he is innocent; I doubt Ted Kennedy's finances, if scrutinized (they never will be), would be.

It would be fitting if the FBI would raid his office as well. Then we could see the hypocrisy of Congress subpoenaing Bush’s advisors and ignoring executive privilege while claiming Congressional privilege for Stevens.

Ted Stevens appears to epitomize everything that’s wrong with Congress - the infamous “bridge to nowhere” that he and Don Young brought to national prominence had more to do with the 2006 GOP defeat than the war, and his desperate attempts to protect congressional earmarks, along with his abysmal ignorance about the technologies he’s passing laws on, provide solid evidence in support of term limits.

NO ONE in the GOP should shed a tear for Ted, but we should be upset with the GOP in Alaska for giving Ted to us.

This reeks. I am very suspicious. I remember all too well the timing of the FBI investigation of Curt Weldon, the mere news of which cost him the election where he was replaced by a Clinton plant. As for the outcome, there have still not been any charges filed.

I wonder what the Clinton camp has on Stevens.

The remodeled home has 2,471 square feet of living area, about double its original size, with a taxable value of about $420,000, tax records show. The carpentry work alone for the renovation is known to have exceeded $100,000.

1200-1300 sq ft house is dinky & 2471 sq ft falls short of being a McMansion. Median wage for union carpenters in Alaska is currently $26-27 hr; 10% earn $39+ per hour. Figuring a carpenter being billed at $50 an hour, approx. 2000 man hours or 50 man weeks. Certainly not outside the realm of possibility for rennovation/ addition work which is considerably more complicated & time consuming than new construction and I'm thinking lower 48 & likely considerably less windshield time than Alaska projects.

IMO, this dog won't hunt based on costs so, if there is a case, it's going to have to be about Who paid the bills.

Time to dump this guy...

'Bridge-to-Nowhere' Ted... along with Cunningham and Foley... had a lot to do with our narrow defeats in 2006. Stevens also voted against Hunter's 2006 bill for 360 miles of new, border fencing.

This a perfect example of calling a sow's ear a silk purse. 2500 sq. ft. is the average size of most new houses built in most areas of the U.S. The cost of construction for Alaska where everything but lumber has to be shipped from far away is pretty low. I realize that Ted Stevens and the rest of his pork barreling GOP buddies have to be replaced with honest GOP senators, but trumping up a construction story like this one is lame. The FBI must be looking for something other that construction documents.

This is what Senator Stevens gets for voting against amnesty.

I wonder if the Justice Department is going to investigate Diane Feinstein and the government contracts given to her husband, or Harry Reid’s land deals. No I don’t.

Ted Stevens was one of those crooked senators who voted to give our Panama Canal away.

I loathe him.
