Meredith, N.H. -- Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani on Monday accused Democrats of favoring a controlling "nanny government" as he continued his bashing of the rival party.
The former New York mayor, opening a two-day campaign trip in the first primary state, also claimed that Democrats would raise taxes between 20 percent to 30 percent. He offered no specifics to back up those figures.
"Democrats are kind of falling over each other seeing who can raise taxes faster," Giuliani said. "It looks like they're going to raise taxes anywhere between 20 to 30 percent. John Edwards just said he's going to raise the capital gains tax double that. Last time we did that, we lost 40 percent in revenue. The last time we did what John Edwards is discussing, the United States lost revenue by basically discouraging people from making investments."
Edwards has proposed raising capital gains taxes for the wealthy while creating tax breaks for the middle class.
Last week, Giuliani called the Democrats the "party of losers" and singled out Edwards and Democratic Sen. Barack Obama for criticism on economics and foreign policy.
Giuliani argued that he favors less government and lower taxes.
"That's what makes America great, not this nanny government that Democrats want to give us, where government controls your entire life," he said.
Giuliani leads in some national polls, but trails former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney by double figures in the most recent New Hampshire surveys.

Welcome home.
I am sure she would love to run against Rudy and get her ass whacked.
I think she prefers Thompson. No telling how much dirt could be dug up on a trial lawyer lobbyist.
John
Oh, yeah - how could I forget...
Updated list:
Giuliani wants:
Abortion on Demand
Illegal Alien Amnesty
Gay Marriage
Gun Confiscation
I live in NJ and own guns. I don’t recall Guiliani as a gun grabber. He is no Ray Nagin for sure. What are you going to do...vote for Hillary?
Maybe to liberals and some knucklehead moderates. Around Free Republic, Rooty is persona non grata.
Giuliani is a full fledged, lifelong liberal. Rooty is a gun grabbing big govt liberal, who supports gay rights, amnesty and global warming bunkum. He has no respect for the unborn or the Constitution. From a conservative perspective, the mans a phony and a fraud.
Never trust a liberal.
I know what you mean. I think Guiliani and Romney have the rhetorical potential to connect with voters who'd like an out from the 'metrosexualization' of public policy.
When the chips were on the table in the 2000 NYS Senate race, Rooty Toot dropped out. And don't give me that crap about his prostate cancer. Lotsa folks have campaigned with cancer. Paul Tsongas and John Kerry come to mind. Btw, Hillary led Rooty in every poll during that campaign in 2000. She would have kicked his butt.
2008 would be no different in that regard. Two liberals, one Democrat and one Republican. Now just who do you think New Yorkers will choose? The worst thing the GOP could do is nominate the liberal Giuliani to lead the party of Reagan.
"Oooooh, the Hillary bogeywoman! I'm so skeered!"
Rudy wants a nanny government too - note his gun control policy for New York
Giuliani stripped 30,000 existing gun owners permits, and effectively made it impossible for new permits. No, I am not going to vote for hillary, I am going to vote for a conservative, which it appears you are not going to do if you like Giuliani.
If you need proof of the stripping of peoples constitutional rights by Giuliani, i'll bet freeper Pharmboy would explain if you asked him.
He is a gun-grabber, all right, who does not have an inkling of what our beloved Second Amendment is about.
Ay carumba. Rudy is one of the Nanny-est people I’ve seen.
The more I watch the candidates, the more likely it is that Giuliani will be part of the ticket. It is entirely possible that it will be Thompson-Giuliani.
It depends on if Bloomberg runs. If he does we need to win the south and west and a Mitt-Thompson ticket may be best for that.
If Bloomberg doesn’t run then I would like to see Rudy-Condi Rice.
People see Thompson on TV and for some reason think that is really him. He is just being an actor.
The real Thompson is a trial lawyer, lobbyist.
John
Thompson just brought in the guy who managed Jeb Bush in Florida and was Bush's advisor during the fight with Al Gore over the Florida votes. I don't see it your way, but then one never knows. I don't think that Bloomberg will hurt the GOP in this race if he runs. The Dems usually take NY no matter what. Bloomberg means nothing in some of the other battleground states like Florida where Thompson should carry the day. All Bloomberg might do is split the middle of pack votes that might have gone for Hillary IMHO.
