I have heard a report which states one reason for this: there is absolutely no social security net within Nigeria, save one. The presence of children, which appear after a sanctioned marriage. But, proof of fertility is hard to provide during the courtship process...

Fertility is the number one qualification to a sanctioned marriage, and large numbers of Nigerian men impregnate their potential brides-to-be on purpose, and in secret. Once the woman reports a successful pregnancy, both do what is necessary to abort to avoid the shame of a out-of-wed lock pregnancy. And then they get married, both confident that the biggest expectation from both families will be met.

Nigeria is not a place that has its act together as of yet.

Just curious but how does someone “commit” abortion? I thought you “have” one ... sorry about the nitpicking - it’s a boring Sunday ...

complicated cases of abortion claimed 220,000 lives in Africa's most populous country in 2006. Sadauki said that unsafe abortions were on the rise and were performed mostly by quacks, adding that it had accounted for 40 per cent of maternal deaths in the country.

I ain't buying it. Somebody's dropped some decimals.

If 220,000 women died from mishandled abortions in a year, and that is 40% of the total maternal deaths, then about 550,000 women died having babies (or not).

According to this site, http://www.overpopulation.com/faq/maternal-mortality/maternal-mortality-rate-by-country-africa/, the maternal mortality rate for Nigeria is 1,000 per 100,000 or 1% of pregnancies.

For 550,000 women to die having babies, the country would have to have 55,000,000 pregnancies each year. With a population of 131M, that doesn't seem likely.

The actual number of births in Nigeria is 40 per 1000 population each year, which would total somewhere around 5.2M, which would make the total number of maternal deaths about 50,000.

It is likely that the article overstates maternal deaths by a factor of about 10. As I said, probably dropped a decimal.

If 550,000 mothers died each year, that would be a pretty significant percentage of the total of about 2.2M deaths in all.

The rest of the women in Nigeria are beautiful white models who grew up in the U.S., failed to learn to speak good english, got trapped in Nigeria on a trip, and just need you to pay their hotel and travel bill so they can come marry you.
