No Candidate is Safe…
Although candidates will be forced to discuss a laundry list of special interest issues throughout the campaign season, abortion, gay rights, campaign reform, health care, social security, just to name a few, the 2008 national election is likely to be decided upon two issues that no candidate has offered a good solution for yet.
No Candidate is Safe
On the Democrat side, the mostly unpopular wife of a once party popular oval office playboy is running and leading in a vacuum void of any serious qualified challenger. But her campaign is far from safe. She has yet to attract even 50% support from her own constituents and she has not yet faced any real campaign opposition. If she survives her party primary with only 50% support from her base, she will be in real trouble in the general election where the other half of the country would rather vote for Satan himself.
On the Republican side, the conservative base is so angry with Bush and his compassionate conservative friends that they have largely stopped sending money to the national committee, rejected all RNC candidates at the starting gate and started drafting their own Republican candidate in hopes of reforming their party to conservative values before November 2008. Two thirds of the Republican candidates can’t get above 2% in the Republican polls and the so-called “top tier” candidates can’t even break above 30% among Republican voters.

I have been an admirer of Ron Paul for many years.
I can not fathom why he doesn’t want to defend this country from terrorism.

Other than the hopeless hope of a candidate with no chance of winning anything, I mean. Now that’s funny!
Here’s an idea. He didn’t get chosen as Bush’s running mate till the last minute before the convention, and even then he initially was heading up the selection committee. Since he just had the pacemaker replaced, and is still relatively young, if Fred won’t run lets draft Cheney.

Radio news commented this morning that McCain has dropped so much in the polls because of his pro-war stance. Amazing they didn’t notice his pro-amnesty stance.

That’s all well and good...however your REAL opponents are the multi-nationals who write the issues and give them airtime...and fund the candidates.

The 2006 Lesson - never stay home on election day unless you want your worse nightmare to come true.
The Ross Perot Lesson - Never allow the other side to divide your conservative vote and win an election by minority default.
The Bob Dole Lesson - No matter how great an individual might be, if he’s unelectable, don’t nominate him, unless it’s your intent to throw the race at the gate...

Very good and very well written overview of the current situation. The lower tier, those with a -, *, 1, 2, 3% by their name in polling data are not contenders and will never be the winner of the nomination. I think it will come down to a race between Guiliani, Romney and Thompson at first and in the end it will be Guiliani vs. Thompson. Now someone like Paul may stick until the end much like Keyes did in 2000 as it won’t take much money for him to make a few appearences with a limited staff.
