Toyota Motor to build a parts factory in Mississippi

Japanese automaker Toyota has announced plans to establish a parts factory in the southern US state of Mississippi.

The company is going to invest around 200 million-dollar on this upcoming plant in the USA.

Toyota said in a statement that Toyota Auto Body will establish Auto Parts Manufacturing Mississippi Inc. in August.

They plan to hire 260 people for this plant which is expected to start production by 2010.

This new plant will operate near a Toyota assembly plant which is already under construction in the village of Blue Springs.

This plant would be their eight production plant in the US market which is one of the most important markets for the Japanese auto maker.

Score another for Mississippi. A perfect complement to the Tupelo plant already under construction. AND another testament to how valuable the trust building ability of Governor Haley Barbour has been for Mississippi.

No one ever talks about “insourcing”.

Oh, and in case that wasn’t clearly implied, congratulations to the great state of Mississippi. Whenever I see someone in the South or in my native Kentucky complaining about people buying Japanese cars, I laugh. Japanese and German auto manufacturers have been a big part of the economic renaissance of the South.

The ‘new Big 3’.. So how come the home teams (ford, chevy, mopar) are losing this? Unions?

Unions are the ones telling folks to buy American cars only.

Does anyone know if at the car plants, do they fly the US and Mississippi flags at the sites?

Actually if you look at the stock holders and mutual fund holdings worldwide, it can be argued that Toyota and Honda are probably not purely Japanese companies anymore.

Congratulations to Mississippi. It is great to see the investment in industry and jobs in a right to work state. You would think that Detroit and the rust belt states would be getting this message by now.

Imagine that. Building a production facility close to your target market...What a concept.

Just curious. How much do these plants pay? Twenty something an hour? Less? More?

Neither plant is open in MS yet so I can’t say for sure. Maybe one of our TN FReepers can tell us what they pay at the plant there.

Based on local media reports, the target is $17 to $20 per hour.

BTW, that is what I am hearing is the starting pay at the Severcorr steel mill here in Columbus as well.

Re insourcing:

The U.S. automakers continue to go outside the U.S. and lose money—while the Japanese build more and more plants here and still make money on their cars.

Somebody at the UAW and Ford and GM ought to look at their business plan. It obviously aint working.

Unions deserve all of the blame with regards to shoddy workmanship and poor quality in Ford, GM and Chrysler vehicles. But I also lay a large part of the blame on the management of these companies. In addition to literally giving away the store in terms of wages and benefits to the unions over the years, executives still continue to draw large salaries even in the face of huge losses. Where is the incentive to improve quality when these executives are making tons of money right and left for not doing the right thing?

And lest anyone thinks I am some sort of communist, I would have no problem with any executive making infinity dollars a year provided that the company actually posted a profit.

No kidding. There is an ever-growing segment of US car buyer who won't even consider going to a GM, Ford or Chrysler showroom just because of the quality and reliability issues related to their products.

When you are in legal trouble, do you get a cheap lawyer or the best you can afford? If you have slow cancer, do you scrimp on your care? Auto companies have to go out into the market place and hire the best they can, and it is expensive because just like a loser sports team, good talent, does not want to come to a loser team, or industry. Just think, if you were a hotshot best in class business major, would you want to go to work for a possible dead end no future company or domestic industry? So, perversely, Detroit has to pay even more.

Haven’t seen the Nissan plant down south but I know the Mercedes plant in Birmingham flies Old Glory.

I’ll be interested to see if they give priority parking to Toyota drivers like I’ve read about other car plants doing.
