July 28, 2007 -- From Russia with . . . hate? Police yesterday arrested a Pace University student born in the former Soviet Union and charged him with a hate crime for allegedly clogging toilets with the Koran on two occasions last year.
Business major Stanislav Shmulevich, 23, was collared at his Brooklyn home after cops confronted him with surveillance photos from the incidents last Oct. 13 and Nov. 21.
In both cases, a teacher discovered a Koran in a second-floor toilet at 1 Pace Plaza in lower Manhattan.

i thought one of my comments was deleted but it appeared minutes later
Society has every right to determine whether or not a person can express hatred for Allah, or God, or Jesus, . . ., and if it determines that a person doesn’t, to shun, riducule, mock and not invite to parties persons who go against its determination.
The Federal government due to the 1st Amendment, and the government of the several states due to the 1st and 14th Amendments have no right whatsoever to criminalize behavior on the basis of whether or not it comports with society’s favored stance vis-a-via one religion or another, or religion in general.
Status Quo for the Ivory Towers of the Universities. The will bow to islamofascism as they piss on Judeo-Christian faiths even as the islamofascist are “thanking” them for their support by slitting the leftists’ necks.
And we pay millions of dollars to send ourselves and our kids to these institutions of “higher learning”. Is there a wonder why trade schools, apprenticeships, and “non-traditional” colleges are gaining momentum?
Yep, you’re right. It’s back, under Fed up. Guess the place has more cojones than I thought.
My thoughts exactly. If this had been the Bible would it still be a hate crime? If not, the system is broken.
i see your comment now.
i made quite a few since yours.
a toilet crime for a toilet book of a crap filled religion...
unbelieveable that muzzie terrorists are provided so many rights for terrorist activities and flushing a koran down the crapper where it belongs is the hate crime!!!!
this society seems to be circling the bowl ~ soon to be following that koran!!!!
When are we going to stop letting liberals ruin our lives?
If that koran was his private property he could use the pages as butt wipe if he wanted too.
Apparently, in NYC one mans "art" is another man's hate crime...er..um...vice-versa.
Not all Russians are scum.
It is amazing isn’t it? It is censorship if you protest that your tax dollars are spent to fund art that profanes or destroys Christian symbols, but if someone mocks Islam in a crude way it is a “hate crime.” I can see how the guy should perhaps be charged with vandalism and be made to pay the plumber’s cost for any damages but that is it. Whether he flushed the Koran, the Bible, the Book of Satan, a car repair manual or the phone book should have no legal bearing whatsoever.
What a bunch of dumb a$$es.
His mistake was not buying his own toilet, and making an art piece out of it. Surely Pace would have protected his freedom of expression then.
I don’t get it - what was the “crime”????
Who go gets to define “hate crime”? Whoever is offended? What is the objective criteria? Flushing a Koran down a toilet sounds like civil disobedience to me. Heck, street protesters cause more potential problems than that in terms of blocked traffic( ambulances, fire engines, etc.)
And further, that the government doesn't, as stipulated by the Constitution, have a right or legal precedent to sanction that individual? If that is what you are stating, the I'm pretty sure we agree...
I'm not sure I like the idea of surveillance cameras in the rest rooms.
