Fred Thompson Nears Entry Into GOP Prez Race, Pro-Life Sen. Heads Bid

Houston, TX (LifeNews.com) -- Former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson took his potential presidential bid to Texas on Thursday to campaign in Houston and Dallas and raise money to lead up to his likely announcement. Meanwhile, Thompson named a former Michigan senator who is pro-life as his campaign chairman.

On Tuesday, Thompson replaced acting campaign manager Tom Collamore with former Michigan senator and Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham.

Abraham is a celebrated pro-life senator who maintained a strong pro-life voting record while in the U.S. Senate and his wife Jane Abraham has been the chairman of the Susan B. Anthony List, a leading pro-life political group.

The selection comes on the heels of news reports that Thompson did some work for a pro-abortion group in 1991 when his law firm was hired by an abortion advocacy organization to lobby the White House on abortion issues.

The former attorney and actor then compiled a 100 percent pro-life voting record while representing Tennessee in the Senate and has repeatedly said he favors overturning Roe v. Wade.

"Those are the kind of things you do ... you make adjustments as you go along. We are on track in that regard," Thompson said during a Houston rally, according to the Chronicle newspaper.

"As you know, I've got some plans. I'm going to make a final decision in the not-too-distant future that I'm going to need your help on," he said about the timetable of his likely entrance into the Republican primary.

"It's going to come down to ideas that are going to help this country," Thompson said. "It's not often that a person has the opportunity to really do that."

His campaigning comes as a new Washington Post-ABC News poll of Republicans finds pro-abortion ex-New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani still leading the field with 37 percent.

Arizona Sen. John McCain and Thompson have 16 and 15 percent apiece and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney came in fourth with 8 percent.

Polls in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, the first three primary states, show a much closer race with Giuliani holding slim leads.

How many more of these “Fred is fixing to announce” threads. Time to fish or cut bait. I hope that the Senator is not playing with our heads folks!

Well pissant will be along shortly to throw a monkey wrench in this. Clear out if you don’t want to be flipped.

Just remember Fred, you need to be tuned in to what the Republican base supporters are saying. If you do, you’ll do well, if you don’t, You will fail miserably. We are sick and tired of Rino’s, and mean to purge them all from the party, even if it costs.

Oh come now. Pissant is entitled to his opinion, wrong or right. I haven’t really seen much of his Fred opinions, but I’m sure he brings up some valid points.
I’m a bit concerned about Fred’s choice of campaign partners as well.

This piece is primarily about his pro-life credentials, written by a pro-life organization.

As to “fish or cut bait”, I’m a fisherman and I don’t start fishing until I get my tackle properly rigged and get to the fishing hole. Otherwise, I am wasting my time. Fred will not formally announce until he is ready. His organiztion isn’t ready yet. That is why he is upgrading his staff.

I don't want him tuned in, I want to hear what he really believes. Telling people what you think they want to hear is a good way to get burned.

That's great. Abraham also has a lifetime ACU rating of 92. But his immigration position makes him appear like another Mel Martinez.

Fact is, Abraham is not running for POTUS.

And his fair share of gossip, rumor and innuendo too.

I’m being a little coy with pissant. Me and pissant have had some good discussions.

Oh, I tend to think the issue is FRED isn’t ready yet.

As long as Fred’s speechifying, or cutting a YouTube video, or placing a press release (like this one), or acting in a Hollywood script, why, he’s God’s Gift to Conservatives.

Problem is, we have yet to see him take on ANYONE head-to-head... and no way can he win the nomination, let alone the presidency, without that ability.

He must be furiously attempting to get up to speed at actually competing in a campaign.

Or maybe he’s just not up to the job.

Absolutely. And they all do it.
If he is a true Republican, he won’t be saying what we want to hear, he’ll be promising action on those issues.
He’ll have to convince us that he will.

"Fact is, Abraham is not running for POTUS." That's true. But obviously if he's a close pal of Fred's, he'll have influence on him should he become POTUS.

If you want to learn a little of what kind of person someone is, take a look the people he calls friends.

Yep. And possibly the worst mistake Fred could make.
It brings everything he claims to stand for into question.
I know I can’t dismiss this stupid move without an explanation. And if that explanation can’t stand up to scrutiny, then Fred’s not worth the risk.

After almost 40 years of political involvement, the best advise I can give you is, don’t jump to unfounded conclusions.

Although Spencer Abraham has never impressed me, I’m not about to write off FredT before he makes his candidacy official. I'm willing to give him an opportunity to make his case on the issues to conservative voters and see what happens.

Abraham lost to Debbie Stabenow, but he also was deputy chief of staff for VP Dan Quayle and supposedly rebuilt the Michigan GOP into a viable entity. And he has some solid conservative credentials. An 86 (not 92) lifetime rating from the ACU is pretty conservative in my book.

My only concern is his immigration stance. That I question.

i’m a little put off by this too, but you have to remember some things: the race started VERY early this time around and it’s not that he’s late to the party, everyone else was very early. also, he is still, i think, under some contractual obligations with Law And Order. but come on already.

I'm sorry for my language and intent earlier Nathan...

I tend to get upset at all the anti-Fred posts that show up here without any regard to anything the man actually says...

I don't know if your in that camp or not but I wish that all of us freepers could get together to make sure that we beat the dems this next election cycle...

Regards Pande.
