Transcript: 'Special Report With Brit Hume,' July 26, 2007 (Thompson Campaign Problems)

"....Has the presidential campaign of Republican Fred Thompson gone off the rails before the candidates has even declared he is running? ...[snip]?

CARL CAMERON, FOX NEWS CHIEF POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT: Well, it looks like there is a bit of a mutiny starting on Fred Thompson's campaign ship even before it leaves the dock. Another staffer resigned today. That is three in three days, with more expected, over what insiders call the haphazard, unfocused and undisciplined way things are being handled or not handled and over the candidates' wife.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

CAMERON (voice-over): On the surface, Thompson is soaring. Before even officially entering the race, he is second in the polls and has recruited 30 people around the country to run things. The problem is who is in charge? Aides say Thompson wants his wife constantly involved. And it is causing problems. Mrs. Jeri Kean Thompson (ph) has authority over just about everything and uses it, often making the campaign run in circles.

Critics have dubber her his trophy wife. ...[snip]

(END VIDEOTAPE)

Thompson does have a campaign strategy. It is basically to do well enough in Iowa and New Hampshire, the first test states, and then make a strong showing in South Carolina to be credible, and score a big win in Florida that ultimately catapults him to the nomination. It is perfectly plausible campaign strategy. But word is out about the internal problems and prominent Republican operatives have actually been turning down job offers as a result of it, that and the fact that a few of them hired are actually leaving. Brit?

HUME: So does the campaign have a plan to turn this around?

CAMERON: [snip]... Aides really want him to spend a little bit of time to talk to his wife about how things need to change. Brit?........"

At least the Thompson’s were smart enough to not go on Barbara Walters.

Not much of substance in this report. I suspect: much ado about very, very little.

LOL What a non-issue--I haven't heard a single human being mention this.

I'd rather these problems happen before the train leaves the station--McCain was doing quite well at this point in his run, wasn't he?

Grasping. We used to read the same things about Nancy Reagan’s involvement with RR campaigns.

Here’s what I don’t get....

The hype is that Thompson’s wife is a former political operative, either as a lobbyist or working for congress critters or some such.

So okay, the lady’s got it in her blood. And further, while I normally frown on nepotism, I don’t see a damn thing wrong with a husband or wife being actively involved in the campaign of a spouse.

First, who made it a rule that this is not allowed? We all have families out here in la-la land. Some of us volunteer for church, some for local political parties. If our spouse is interested it almost always becomes a joint endeavor. Second, no one is more affected than a spouse when there’s a major election involved. So why is it considered bad manners to involve that spouse.

But hold your horses before you start yelling. I know that too often the spouses get involved and they’re not qualified. And as a member of the campaign staff having a nanny hover about has got to be a pain.

The candidate ought to set the spouse straight as to his/her position in the campaign, who reports to who, and damn right, if the candidate wants a spouse in charge, then so be it. Maybe Thompson’s wife is the most qualified to lead the campaign,.

Hey, if the candidate’s wrong, or a spouse has pulled wool over his/her lover’s eyes, then they won’t win! Works a little like capitalism, you see?

It should NOT be the law, as the Dems would have it, that a candidate’s spouse cannot get paid by the candidate’s campaign. Again, something the gubmint should not be getting involved in much less jealous losing candidates who do not have talented spouses.

Does anyone doubt that Hillary was ever NOT in charge of Bill in every way, shape or form? And where would the Clintons be what with all their woes without the firm and guiding hand of Mistress Hillary? Hate her or love her but damn she is the epitome of a candidate spouse guiding the candidate.

It often works is what I’m saying here.

I wouldn’t put much in all this early propaganda coming from the Thompson campaign. Remember he’s got BOTH the Dem AND the Repub candidates wishing him dead, figuratively. I can feel the lies and spin aloft in the wind as the Thompson campaign, the fear and challenge to every major candidate out there, beging to go aloft.

Thompson might also fall like a heavy log. So be it.

They lie to us, ladies and gems. All the time they lie to us.

I don’t get any of this junk on Thompson’s wife.

(1)Didn’t she do this for a living?
(2)Didn’t 43 run the ‘88 campaign for 41?
(3)Didn’t RFK run the campaign for JKF?

There is a good explanation of all this at Redstate - BTW, it’s complimentary of Jeri.

Named directly quoted sources would have added some substance to this report.

If Carl Cameron had them he would have used them.

My only problem with Thompson letting his wife get involved are those flashbacks of how much Therza helped Katchup boy.

There are several campaigns out there that would like to be recognized by the media as having this problem[s]. You know those with -, *, 1,2,3% after their names in the polls.
