Liberals Going After Fox Advertisers

NEW YORK (AP) - Liberal activists are stepping up their campaign against Fox News Channel by pressuring advertisers not to patronize the network.

MoveOn.org, the Campaign for America's Future and liberal blogs like DailyKos.com are asking thousands of supporters to monitor who is advertising on the network. Once a database is gathered, an organized phone-calling campaign will begin, said Jim Gilliam, vice president of media strategy for Brave New Films, a company that has made anti-Fox videos.

The groups have successfully pressured Democratic presidential candidates not to appear at any debate sponsored by Fox, and are also trying to get Home Depot Inc. to stop advertising there.

At least 5,000 people nationwide have signed up to compile logs on who is running commercials on Fox, Gilliam said. The groups want to first concentrate on businesses running local ads, as opposed to national commercials.

"It's a lot more effective for Sam's Diner to get calls from 10 people in his town than going to the consumer complaint department of some pharmaceutical company," Gilliam said.

Some of videos produced by Gilliam's company compile statements made by Fox anchors and guests that the activists consider misleading, such as those that question global warming.

Representatives for Fox News Channel, which is owned by News Corp., did not immediately return calls for comment.

Home Depot has not had an unusual number of calls, said spokesman Jerry Shields, and the home improvement chain will not change its advertising strategy.

"We're not in the business of censoring media," Shields said. "We need to reach our customer base through all mediums available."

Groups like the Sierra Club have targeted Home Depot because they believe it's inconsistent for the company to promote environmentally friendly products while advertising on a network that has questioned global warming.

The groups seem particularly angry at Fox's Bill O'Reilly, who has done critical reports on left-wing bloggers. On July 16, O'Reilly said the DailyKos.com Web site is "hate of the worst order," and sent a reporter to question JetBlue Airways Corp. CEO Dave Barger about the airline's sponsorship of a gathering run by DailyKos.

He'll never ride on JetBlue again, O'Reilly said.

MoveOn.org is campaigning against Fox because it says the network characterizes itself as a fair news network when it consistently favors a conservative point of view, said Adam Green, the organization's spokesman.

"We're not trying to silence anybody," Green said. "Rush Limbaugh has a right to be on the air—he admits his point of view. Fox doesn't."

We are heading toward a major historical restructuring in this country—we can’t continue being this divided indefinitely.

A coup may be in order when the troops come home after winning in Iraq.

Anyone that doesn't want to adhere to the U.S. constitution as written will be given an option to take early retirement that he/she can't refuse. (Of course the retirement wouldn't include the cushy pay and perks that the congress-critters have voted into law for themselves).

The dems will boycott the Fox debates- until the ratings come in. Then it will be tough to unboycott them!

Look at Live Earth ratings and the ratings for the CNNBooBTube debates. The last debate got 600,000 viewers, or so I heard.

Liberals don’t go to Home Depot and I think Home Depot knows this.

I’d boycott their networks but they don’t have any advertisers to boycott! Don’t these people have anything better to do than bother one network?

Hay Bob...Whazzup?

Lot’s of people on this thread calling for something to happen but I don’t see any leadership or initiative.

You want something to happen, do it yourself.

Yes, if those on this thread want something to happen they need to get organized.

On this issue I prefer to sit on the sidelines and see how it plays out.

Fox News IMO has drifted away from an alternative to the MSM to some degree.

And HD is an enabler of Illegal Immigration

The problem is conservatism doesn’t have an answer

True. They have been told it many times, but didn't/don't listen.

So why do they bother? From what I read there’s not a whole lot of evidence that Fox News is any different from the other broadcast or cable news outlets. In other words, moveron.org and fellow travelers are among liberals with their comrades at Fox.

The heads of NewsCorp gave to Democrat candidates. Perhaps they should boycott those candidates too. Inluding Herr Clinton.

Conservatives should’ve been doing this LONG time ago ....I do not patronize liberal papers nor ABC CBS etc. I dropped subscriptions to papers I otherwise enjoyed. The rest of you should do the same.

Liberals can’t live without conservatives. Who’s going to support them and protect them from themselves? That’s why this boycott crap and their threats to “secede” are so laughable. They’d all starve if they didn’t kill each othere first if they were on their own.

There are sponsors and ads on public tv/radio, they just keep it at the top/bottom of the show, not throughout.

No indeed. I sure would like to read a detailed analysis of what could transpire in America among the various political (non-elected) factions. In other words, will the South rise again and kick ass?

I do detect a growing rift in the regions but more pronounced among differing beliefs: conservatives vs. liberals. Can't continue folks. Lincoln's "mystic chords" will take you only so far before all hell breaks loose.

Anybody got any commentaries on this phenomenon? If so, please post.

Folks who watch FoxNews need to counter by buying things from those who advertise and writing letters to the advertisers to tell them that they're patronizing the business BECAUSE they advertise on Fox. I wonder to which group the companies will pay the most attention?

In other words go on OFFENSE rather than play defense!

You gotta love it when liberals show their true colors: intolerant and stupid. Fox is hardly a conservative bastion. That includes O’Reilly, whose views are all over the map (conservative on some issues, liberal to moderate on others.)

What these idiots can’t stand is that FOX presents a range of viewpoints, from far lefties like Malik Shabazz to the other end of the spectrum. It has all sorts of liberals on the payroll. But we know that facts don’t matter to this crowd.

Home Depot is for do-it-yourselfers. That would not describe the average liberal. They're waiting for Government Depot.
