Many owners of older TV sets who still receive free, over-the-air broadcasts are unaware that their sets will no longer function after Feb. 17, 2009 without a settop converter, lawmakers observed at a Washington D.C. hearing on Thursday.

“Darn, I just finished getting accustomed to color over black and white.”

LOL!

I will never forget, when everyone had a black and white TV, they sold a clear, color striped piece of cellophane that you taped on your TV for “color.” Even though I was young, I thought that was so stupid.

And people bought it! lol

Left over from a rabbit stew no doubt.

You really think that is going to matter?

Millions of people despite the advertising blitz I’m sure will follow to alert them to that fact will either be ignored, unheard or forgotton. It always happens and I doubt this is going to be any different.

I remember that too. Also, remember the ‘cracked screen’ cellophane you could place over the screen as a joke?

Have you tried finding a really old radio?

I have a 1937 Delco floor model radio in my living room.

We have 2 rather old 19 inch TV’s. We can’t get reception here, so we have satellite. I guess we’re “safe”. That is until they jack up our bill for basic services, and we cut it off. No more Food Network, wrestiling, Judge Judy, local weather, blahblahblah....

I can't say that I have rabbit ears but I do have some killer dust bunnies upstairs.

Hey, does this mean folks like us in the desert wouldn’t have to pay for cable to access basic Los Angeles channels?

My recollection that the range of the transmitter is line of sight, about 45 miles if no obstructions. My recollection is that _Jim knows about these issues, I’ll ping him.

This conversion was originally slated for completion by 2005. The weenie politicians pushed the date to just after the super bowl game in 2009. That's more than enough notice. It's not a damn necessity anyway. Save $1 per day and buy a replacement before the "due" date. Any new TV offered for sale already has the digital tuner built-in now.

We’re right up against the San Gabriel Mountains. The side with ski resorts and stuff. Those would be obstructions. This also why DirectTV just nailed us for 60 bucks a month for basic service, which we can’t afford. They’re gonna jack up our internet this month, but neglected to tell us just how much. Dial up, here we come! Leave a message, we’ll call y’all back :(

We might be able to get Bakersfield. A friend of ours had a 300ft antenna, and got Bakersfield, and I think Fresno. That was a long time ago.

I just have rabbit ears.

I guess we'll have to spring for a converter by 2009.

I missed out on the “cracked screen” cellophane. How funny, huh?

Those were “the good ol days.”

We saw how that mindset played out when Katrina hit New Orleans.

It is not the antenna;antennas really aren't black/white or color or digital.Antennas don't discriminate!

But millions of brand new "old" TV sets from last months Chinese production run are on the shelves of many retailers at bargain prices;those sets are adequate for the needs of many people and I ,for one, think the whole digital TV a crappy, stupid bit of politics.

Originally promoted to revitalize the defunct American consumer electronics industry, yet all the sets are still produced in China or other cheap labor countries .Americans will send further trillions of dollars overseas because of government coercion. And greed in the form of frequency auctions.

“I found a web site that said attic mounted anntennas should be good for 15 or 20 miles.”

I’ve got an outside antenna that picks up a signal from a repeater 50 miles away.

One channel. Reception varies...considerably.

Sometimes it’s hard to see the puck on HNOC! Sometimes it’s hard to tell one team from another.

My bride And I figure satellite TV would ruin our lives. Why take a chance? We love Sirius satellite radio, however, and have it in both home and car.

;^)
