MOSCOW - Former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev criticized the United States, and President Bush in particular, on Friday for sowing disorder across the world by seeking to build an empire.
Gorbachev, who presided over the break-up of the Soviet Union, said Washington had sought to build an empire after the Cold War ended but had failed to understand the changing world.
The Americans then gave birth to the idea of a new empire, world leadership by a single power, and what followed? Gorbachev asked reporters at a news conference in Moscow.
What has followed are unilateral actions, what has followed are wars, what has followed is ignoring the U.N. Security Council, ignoring international law and ignoring the will of the people, even the American people, he said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Bush say they are friends but ties have been strained by U.S. plans for a missile defense shield in Europe, disagreements over Kosovo and the war in Iraq, and competition for allies in the former Soviet Union.
Rival and enemy? Many Russians view the United States as a rival and enemy.
Gorbachev, 76, who left politics after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, is deeply unpopular in Russia. Though feted abroad, he is blamed in Russia for sinking the Soviet empire and plunging millions into poverty.
When I look at todays world I have a worrying feeling about the growth of world disorder, he said.
I dont think the current president of the United States and his administration will be able to change the situation as it is developing now it is very dangerous, he said.

He's just bitter because the empire his country tried to build died.
America doesn’t understand the changing world situation?
Did Gorby understand that he was presiding over the dissolution of the Soviet Union at that time? No he didn’t know that the forces that overthrew communism in eastern Europe during 1989 would also cause the demise of the USSR. So since he didn’t understand enormous historic events in his midst, why does anybody think that he has some insight into what is happening in the world today?
Hey, Gorbo, there’d be more order in the world if you’d just hand yourself over to the Lithuanian authorities. There’s an arrest warrant out for you.
I don't know where they get this crap! Maybe Gorby wants ro blame the US because the USSR failed and he failed.
Dear Gorby - it’s tough going from celebrity to obscurity.
He’s had his chance for greatness, but he cast his lot with the world, especially US lefties. What a shame, completely devoid from reality.
Into the history book as a loser, when it could have been different.
Russia gives nuclear capability to Iran, sells weapons to Syria, and knowingly transfers weapons systems to organizations that have the stated objective of destabilizing their regions for financial and political power...
And we’re the problem?
Gorbachev, the Russian equivalent of Jimmy Carter.
“The Americans then gave birth to the idea of a new empire, world leadership by a single power, and what followed? Gorbachev asked reporters at a news conference in Moscow.”
WOW. JUST WOW! GORBY IS A CFR/ILLUMINATI CONSPIRACY THEORIST.
Meanwhile we leased him office space in the Presidio in S.F. He, no doubt, serves in an advisory capacity to Hillary Clinton.
Be careful there, TheRiverNile. You just might get sand in those big brown eyes of yours.

Me eye color changes with the phases of the Elders (/cue spooky music).
Gorby is a failure.
We call it 'Freedom' here in the west. It is seldom very orderly. Countries and their people exhibiting their freedom may also exhibit strange behavior such as independent actions and independent thought.
Is there really? Now that Lithuania is a part of the EU all member states of the EU,under laws/treaties in force throughout the Union, are required to detain and extradite Gorby if he's found within their borders.
So stay out of London,Paris,Madrid,Berlin and other EU capitals,Gorby...unless you're fond of handcuffs.
There’s probably some sort of a loophole a mile, er kilometer, wide . . . even the Lithuanians know they’ll never see it happen.
