STORY CITY, Ia. - Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney showed his unfamiliarity with the internet during his anti-porn speech at a campaign-sponsored "ice cream social" held July 27.
"YouTube is a website that allows kids to network with one another and make friends and contact each other," said Romney, who is making campaign stops throughout Iowa this week. "YouTube looked to see if they had any convicted sex offenders on their web site. They had 29,000."
Romney, of course, meant the popular social website, MySpace, and not YouTube, a site that allows Internet users to upload and watch a variety of videos.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Romney vowed to encourage computer manufacturers to install internet filtering software on computers sold at retail to help parents protect their children from pornography.
"I want to enforce our obscenity laws," Romney continued. "And I want to make sure people who are using the Internet as a way to become predators on kidsthat we stop that once and for all."

He's going to have to get these internets straight, if only to relate to the 18-35 vote.

On Howie Carr Romney referred to the far left as ‘moonbirds’.

A fitting insult to the MTV crowd. Good.

18-35 doesn’t vote, they forget what they’re supposed to be doing on the first Tuesday in November.

Gonna have to send Algore over to teach him a thing or two about the Internet he created.

How embarassingly out of touch...
Only a moron like that would not know that only one of those websites is for the benefit of ego catering to the 18-35 crowd; solely designed to put inane (and supposedly) irreverant comment and video for all to see.

I don’t think any candidate wants to be the laughingstock of a certain demographic.

It’s not like he promised to meet with Castro, Ahmadinejad, and Hugo Chavez in his first year in office....

MySpace completely sucks (look at me!), but there is some quality stuff on YouTube. The major problem is as you say filtering thru the 98% that is garbage.

Mitt Romney Confuses YouTube with MySpaceRomney is one of the last Rs I'd like to see get the nomination but, big deal!
This ranks right up there with GHWB's fascination with the common grocery barcode scanner.
I couldn't care less whether the President knows YouTube from MySpace or "Survivor" from "American Idol."

How embarassingly out of touch...Gotta go with you on this one akorahil ... cluelessness is not endearing.
I suppose it shouldn't be a shock to me how out of touch with the real world most of the "leaders" in ths country are ... but it is troubling.

I agree. Youtube does have some gems - FAR more than the sea of emo that is myspace...
That being said; I don't know whether to not blame him for not knowing ZOMGWEBSITE1 over ZOMGLOLWEBSITE2, or to chuckle at all the boingboing.net/fark crew who will be blowing their collective gaskets at this calculated jibe.

Hey, USpace these things out when you're riding the MyTube candidate ride.
While I don't hold this pt vs. Mitty, there goes the youth vote outside Utah & Idaho [ya know, as in "dis-connect, dropped-call syndrome]
To: tx_eggman
Eggman,
My comment was stated as such as both websites can be described using the EXACT same description I posted above.
Besides, a Presidential candidate that doesn't know one angsty/pop culture website over another, is not to be considered out of touch.
A presidential candidate that (for instance...)doesn't know people still remember his Keating Five debacle and his desire at a porous border, IS to be considered out of touch
