Richard Milhous Spitzer

Corruption: New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer and the one president ever forced to resign seem to have a lot in common. But at least Nixon waited a little while before using the tools of state against his political enemies.

"I believe for the first time in the history of this state," declared New York State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, that the executive branch "has seen fit to abuse the power of that office to spy and track and attempt to really destroy what apparently the governor's office considers a political rival."

After conducting an investigation, Spitzer's fellow Democrat, New York state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, issued a nearly 60-page report this week recommending that disciplinary action be considered against Spitzer's office for misusing the state police to spy on Bruno so as to dig up political dirt.

"The governor's office planned to obtain information concerning Senator Bruno's use of state aircraft for the purpose of giving this information to the media," said Cuomo's report.

"Under the pretext of responding to a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request, the governor's liaison caused the acting superintendent of the state police to create documents detailing where the state police had driven Senator Bruno, and report details of Senator Bruno's requests for ground transportation, upcoming schedules, and changes to those schedules," Cuomo reported. "This conduct deviated from state police standard operating procedures and past practices, and was not required by FOIL."

Couldn't have happen to a more "holier-than-thou" self righeous little twerp.

With any luck, his political career is burned beyond recognition.

Spitzer has been a scumbag from day one. When he announced that he was running for Governor, it sent shivers down my spine. Amazingly, some here on Free Republic did not share my concerns. I tend to think that I was correct in my observations.

He abused his power then and will continue to do so until he is stopped. Sooner rather than later.

When he announced that he was running for Governor, it sent shivers down my spine.

With reason.

It is apparent that Spitzer craves power for one reason: to punish his "enemies".

And a paranoid is not a pauper when it comes to "enemies"...

I can second you.

Spitzer showed himself fully as a power-hungry socialist when he went after Grasso, for instance. It was not the principle of quality under the law --- it was a class struggle of the proletariat against the rich. He merely sought of having greater means at his disposal by becoming a governor.

I don't know that your FR opponents told you, but there is a huge anti-corporate (anti-capitalist) sentiment here, and those poster may have cheered Spitzer for his war against capitalism.

It pretty obvious Spitzer lacks the smoothness exhibited by the Clintons. He actually seems pretty ham handed wielding tools of the politics of personal destruction. I wouldn’t worry too much about him, but he’s worth keeping an eye on.

The main difference between Nixon and Spitzer is that Nixon had the decency to resign.

Indeed - he is a friend of the ‘toons. I wouldn’t be surprised if he calls in some favors to Billary.

“At this point in time, I believe it’s time to do the people’s business,” Spitzer said. “As significantly critical as it is to delve into these matters, and I would be the last person to ever diminish that, it’s also, at a certain point, right to say: ‘OK, we now know what happened, let’s move on.’”

Nixon was a great man who was struggling against foes determined to destroy the country. Elliot Spitzer is a thug simply seeking to magnify his power by having the police stalk an eighty year-old man.

Therein lies the difference.

Isn’t Andrew Cuomo the son of useless destructive Leftist Mario Cuomo? If so, Spitzer must be in REALLY big trouble.

The newspapers are having a field day.

Front page headline in the NY Post: Spitzer - Come Clean!

The NY Times has this interesting article:
Spitzer Woes Are Enjoyed on Wall Street http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/27/nyregion/27wall.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

Newspapers all across the state (Albany, Buffalo) are running with the story.

Politics in New York aren't the same as in Washington DC. If Spitzer's Democratic rivals see an opportunity here to pick up more power, they'll go for it. Andrew Cuomo and Shelly Silver will definitely benefit if Spitzer's power is diminished. And what do the Democrats have to lose if Spitzer is made into a laughing stock and forced, because of public ridicule, to resign? Then Basil Patterson becomes Governor - and he is easier to make deals with.

Thank YOU.....I was thinking Nixon was a piker compared to Spitzer....and an honorable one, at that. (Although, I’m still mad that he brought us the formation of the Dept of Education)
