BOISE, Idaho (AP) - The Boise State running back who scored the winning points in the Fiesta Bowl, then proposed to his cheerleader girlfriend on national television, says he has hired security for their wedding because of racial threats.
Ian Johnson, who is black, and Chrissy Popadics, who is white, are due to be married Saturday in Boise. Since his Jan. 1 proposal, Johnson said, he has received phone calls, letters and some personal threats from people who object to their marriage plans.
"You take it for what it is - the less educated, the less willing to change," Johnson, 21, of San Dimas, Calif., told the Idaho Statesman for its Tuesday editions. "But we're not acting like we're naive to all the stuff that's going on. We know what's been said. We're going to make sure we're safe at all times. It's an amazing day for us, and we'd hate to have it ruined by someone."
"It's really sad because a lot of people that are probably doing it are the same people who were cheering me on," Johnson said.

Cute couple, they seem very happy..
Not in Idaho. Lovely people there but it is very “white”.
Would that be according to the old "one drop rule"? That rule by the way was intended as a way of keeping the descendants of slaves fathered by whites classified as black and hence slaves themselves. He looked like he had a fairly large proportion of European ancestry. If there are anythings that qualify as races among humans, he would have to be classified as mixed race.
Hey I’m in Texas - we’re usually the ones accused of being so backward and racist.
The pickings seem to be slim.
Idaho is not like Seattle or Portland.
Umm . . . Idaho is not known as the “greenie-progressive utopian northwest.” Not yet, at least.
oh, you should see all the racist trash on the UW Huskies fansite...it is embarrassing
..I, for one, am a proud mutt..
That’s what I thought too. I’ve met a lot of racists with degrees. A piece of paper isn’t what makes or breaks a character defect.
Reminds me of the line from "Blazing Saddles":
"You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new west. You know. Morons."
Great photos...a magic moment.
LOL.....that is a great line and that movie causes me to blush : )
Lots of white supremacist enclaves in Idaho, as well. At least there used to be.
I wish the couple a life of happiness and special blessings.
(That was the most exciting college football game I’ve ever watched.)
My husband is participating in the Family Tree DNA project. It is an amazing project tracing roots.
Well...maybe Ketchum-Sun Valley. But I don't consider them part of Idaho...at least not like Challis, Mackay, Salmon, or Leadore.
LOL!! Very good.
I used to go there for Christmas vacation, never saw so many celebs in my life.
