The War On Bottled Water
The Washington Times ^ | Albert | Stephen

Posted on 07/26/2007 1:17:56 PM PDT by vadum

"Don't drink the water" is a warning doctors and public health officials typically give travelers going overseas. But lately some environmentalists and city officials have been saying the same thing. Only this time they're trying to prevent American consumers from drinking bottled water.

Their reasoning? The energy used to package and transport imported bottled water contributes to global warming. If environmentalist groups have their way, grocery shelves will no longer carry popular products like Fiji from the South Pacific island and Evian from France.

Companies like Fiji and Evian emphasize the cleanliness and purity of their water. Fiji says its water comes from a source "far from pollution" and is "designed to prevent any possibility of human contact." Evian's spring water comes from the French Alps. You would think this water ought to be an environmentalist's dream.

Instead, their bottles provoke nightmares. Allen Hershkowitz of the Natural Resources Defense Council says, "It's ironic that on some of the labels of the bottles, you see snow-capped mountains and glaciers when in fact the production of the bottle is contributing to global warming, which is melting those snowcaps and those glaciers."

Complaints like that have led San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom to issue an executive order banning city departments from purchasing bottled water, even for water coolers.

And Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson ordered his city's Fire Department to replace the usual chests of bottled water and sports drinks used to quench firefighters' thirst. Every firefighter will now be given a refillable 10-ounce container instead. And, get this, two city personnel will be assigned to fill them as they fight fires. I thought only high-schoolers got the job of water boy.......

They can have my San Peligrino when they pry it from my cold dead, uh, mouth.

I will drink what I please. I have actually made a point of buying imported water all the time now just to spite these idiots.

By the way, I work in San Francisco. The mayor has not forbidden us to buy bottled water. SOME departments were allowed to use city funds to buy bottled water (Alhambra), and they can’t do that anymore. We are in a water pool, and we can by what we like with out own money.

I think buying bottled water is like throwing money away (at least here in the USA). I admit, when I go to Mexico, Egypt, Morocco, and a few places in Europe, I like bottled water. Here in the USA, the worst thing is that you get more chlorine.
We have a fridge at home with a water filter, and that works when at home.
When I fill up the coffee pot for coffee at work, it comes from the tap. When I go out to eat at lunch, and buy ice tea, I expect that water comes from the tap.

I am almost 60, and in great health.

Besides, I'm still waiting for the proof that supports their claims that global warming is homogenic.

The term you want there is "anthropogenic." But for a brief instant there, I was thinking . . . well, never mind.

Whoa! They've gone too far when they upset the Perrier crowd.

Their going to lose a lot of Perrier-drinking liberals that would rather drop their support for 'Global Warming' than give up their 'special' water.

On a side note, it appears that most of the bottled water in the stores isn't quite what it's cracked up to be.

The only kind I ever pick up is spring water (from a local set of springs on the Econfina river less than thirty miles from here) distributed by the local Culligan franchise. Unlike every other bottled water on the shelf, I know exactly where this comes from.

Side note #2: Our Gulf of Mexico water temp offshore a few miles from Panama City, FL. rose above 82 degrees today......it should be about 87 degrees this time of the year (as it has in the past) and it is a fairly large heat reservoir. You may notice the hurricane predictions being downsized, based partially on this.

Don’t tell this to Hollywood. It’s the first thing you reach for on set.

I always say, get yourself a small cut crystal glass, drop in 3 small ice cubes, pour in 3 fingers of a singlr malt scotch.
Light cigar and put feet up on the foot rest.
Petting puppy and kitten on the head is not a requirement but just adds to the experience!

I just came back from my dentist who told me there is no fluoridation in bottled water and without it kids get more cavities.

True (my mother is a dental hygienist and I hear this all the time). The other culprit is soda. Even diet soda, which many kids drink now to avoid the sugar, will weaken the tooth enamal.

Not only that, but independent testing has proved that bottled water is no healthier than that of most large American cities.

Oh, no, I didn’t mean to slander either H20 when you are in viral foreign lands, nor the handy gallon jug in the fridge. Just the $10 a glass Evian kinda things don’t make sense to me.

Bottled water is bad for young children. I just came back from my dentist who told me there is no fluoridation in bottled water and without it kids get more cavities.

No, bttled water is NOT bad for kids, and your dentist didn't say that. They do need flouride, and tap water is generally a good source for it in most areas, unles you have a well. Botled water is just fine for kids, as long as they get the required amount f flouride and any other vitamins an dminerals necessary.

While it is, IMO, stupid to pay for filtered water, spring water is great. Many places have tap water that is just plain undrinkable. With a filter on your tap, in MOST cases, it becomes drinkable.

Spring water, on the other hand is great, and tastes great! If these nanny state nazi’s want to remove it because of the packaging, they should simply encourage the recycling of it. Problem solved.

I have a well, so no fluoride anyway, but additionally I have a tap filter, and I refill the bottles and throw them in the fridge once they are cleaned. I use them when I walk, or in the car.

Why would you want to water down the "water of life"? The most a single malt scotch needs is a little cool water to bring out the flavor.

Two different types of flourides. One is a surface treatment. the other is ingested. Different mechanisms involved in restoring tooth enamal as I recall.

The people who complain that gas is too expensive at $3,00 a gallon are willing to pay 24$ a gallon for imported water...

Not only that, but they are willing to pay 6.00 a gallon for tap water in plastic bottles, plus a 5 cent surcharge on the bottle for it being made out of plastic. For liberals, as one Freeper put it some time ago, Conspicuous Hydration = Virtue.

It seems like over a matter of a few months this has gone from a somewhat annoying discussion to a huge push in the media with ad campaigns and tie-ins from everything from insurance to electricity.

Who the hell is behind this big push?

What sort of legislative porking is waiting in the wings for us once the stupidity demographic is well massaged?
