The War On Bottled Water
The Washington Times ^ | Albert | Stephen

Posted on 07/26/2007 1:17:56 PM PDT by vadum

"Don't drink the water" is a warning doctors and public health officials typically give travelers going overseas. But lately some environmentalists and city officials have been saying the same thing. Only this time they're trying to prevent American consumers from drinking bottled water.

Their reasoning? The energy used to package and transport imported bottled water contributes to global warming. If environmentalist groups have their way, grocery shelves will no longer carry popular products like Fiji from the South Pacific island and Evian from France.

Companies like Fiji and Evian emphasize the cleanliness and purity of their water. Fiji says its water comes from a source "far from pollution" and is "designed to prevent any possibility of human contact." Evian's spring water comes from the French Alps. You would think this water ought to be an environmentalist's dream.

Instead, their bottles provoke nightmares. Allen Hershkowitz of the Natural Resources Defense Council says, "It's ironic that on some of the labels of the bottles, you see snow-capped mountains and glaciers when in fact the production of the bottle is contributing to global warming, which is melting those snowcaps and those glaciers."

Complaints like that have led San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom to issue an executive order banning city departments from purchasing bottled water, even for water coolers.

And Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson ordered his city's Fire Department to replace the usual chests of bottled water and sports drinks used to quench firefighters' thirst. Every firefighter will now be given a refillable 10-ounce container instead. And, get this, two city personnel will be assigned to fill them as they fight fires. I thought only high-schoolers got the job of water boy.......

Every liberal I know personally drink bottled water!! Hahahaha!!!

I first noticed the fad back after Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. News coverage showed GIs drinking bottled water. Suddenly people all over were sucking down bottled water.
If anyone had told me that idiots would actually be paying more for just plain water than for soda or beer I would have laughed my butt off. I should have invested in bottled water stock.

"Bottling water melts snowcaps."

And how else would they expect us to get a chunk of glacier through that tiny mouth on the bottle?

Why did you recently buy one and now want to get rid of it?

I’ve been drinking distilled for 15 years. It’s the best thing to drink. The best bottled water I’ve found is Aquafina.

“Looks like you had this all ready to post. Are you concerned about polluting our precious bodily fluids?”

Actually, no, I did not have it ready to post - did a quick search to verify that I was remembering facts correctly.

I am concerned about having our presious public fluids (public water supplies)polluted with fluorides and chlorine. These are serious health hazards - much more so than old asbestos paints or leaded gasoline or ozone in the atmosphere or “global warming”.

Nor in well water- Oh the horror!

Well water has a variety of dissolved minerals, including flourides in wide areas of the country-- especially the West and Southwest.

“If we could remove fluoride from the drinking water of the whole country us dentists would be so overwhelmed with work...”

Your comment suggests you are not in sync with many of your colleagues on the subject of benefit or toxicity of fluorides. Even the “benefit” of topical application of fluoride to the teeth is being questioned - a practice that is not a major concern - it is patient choice. Fluorides in public water supplies is not a choice for those whose water supply is so tainted.

“Do Melita filters filter out the fluoride?”

I don’t know about Melita filters, but my understanding is that a good RO (reverse osmosis) system will eliminate fluoride and chlorine.

I am sorry, but you are just totally wrong. You do not have command of the facts involved. Do some research, the info is readily available.

“I am sorry, but you are just totally wrong.”

Fluorides in public water supplies prevent caries and the earth is flat.

Floride. Saw in the same grocery ad - an 8 pack of bottled water with floride was more expensive than a 24 pack of the same brand without floride. Why can’t we just buy floride in the dental care isle of the grocery store.
And I thought ALL toothpastes contained floride.

I save all my plastic bottles, refill them with water, and put them in the bed of the pickup. They make great targets. If you shoot them through the bottom, they fly up into the air (the water jets out in response to compresson from the bullet).

Great fun!

The whole thing has gone from annoying to entertaining.

I was thinking the exact opposite, from entertaining to annoying.

To me this all seems so silly. There is nothing safer to drink than ordinary tap water brought to you by a regulated water system in the United states. Water is tested weekly for cleanliness and annual tests are done for nearly everything that could be in the water. You, at each metered/user location recieve an annual report from your water company/Municipality. This is required by law

There may be taste and oder issues, even color in some places. But it is clean and pathogen free. When not, there is severe and definite action required immediatly.

Have some fun. Take your favorite bottled water to a testing lab and have it analysed. You will in all probability not be a happy camper.

Whenever I come across a bottled water story I recal a quick sketch I sa (if memory serves) on SNL. It showed two obvious frenchman filling bottles from a sewer pipe and laughing how Americans will buy anything.
