ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) -- A federal judge on Thursday struck down the city of Hazleton's tough immigration law, which has been emulated by cities around the country. The Illegal Immigration Relief Act sought to impose fines on landlords who rent to illegal immigrants and deny business permits to companies that give them jobs. Another measure would have required tenants to register with City Hall and pay for a rental permit.
It was pushed by Hazleton's Republican mayor last summer after two illegal immigrants were charged in a fatal shooting.
Hispanic groups and illegal immigrants sued in federal court to overturn the measures, saying they usurp the federal government's exclusive power to regulate immigration, deprive residents of their constitutional rights to equal protection and due process, and violate state and federal housing law.
That’s the one
where do we sign up?
A nice rope would do just fine. When the will of the people is disregarded the only result that will happen is anarchy.
God forbid, yes, but it that's what it takes, so be it.
I hope they are struck by an illegal on the road.
Thanks for the good info; I’m bookmarking it!

What happened to :
“WE the people, FOR the people, BY the people”
It doesn’t matter what WE THE PEOPLE vote for, if these robed idiots get their marching orders from the lib base and ACLU then it doesn’t work....
Couple thoughts/questions.
How can illegal immigrants legally sue in ANY court?
Also, since I’m not at all versed in the law, how would something like this interfere with regulating immigration at the federal level? I mean, they’ve already crossed the FEDERAL border unhindered, so what should the federal govt have to say at this point?
Does this mean that states can’t criminalize anything relating to illegal immigration? States rights anyone? Doesn’t PA have any say in what happens once a criminal crosses THEIR border?
Seems pretty absurd on its face, but like I said, I’m not at all versed in the law.
Interesting anecdotal observation - from what I remember (my parents lived in Hazleton through the 90s), the political makeup of the area leans to old-fashioned Dem - you know, the kind that still votes Dem even though a lot are more conservative than many RINOS. Lots of Italians, Irish, old-country “who came here legally” folks. IMO, a situation like this could outrage a lot of people and have some real political fallout come next year.
>>How close do you think we came, during the Immigration Bill vote, to open revolt, and why do you think the vote fell the way it did? The Senate got a faint whiff of gunpowder, and didn’t like the smell. By the way, the members of the Thin Blue Line perhaps might start thinking which side they want to be on. They might not get a chance later on...<<
We are no where near any justification of an armed revolt against the United States government. I would die to oppose any such effort.
The immigration bill was a rotten bill - It would have seriously harmed the country and it deservedly killed McCain’s Presidential campaign.
But if some groups really would have taken up arms against the Federal government had that vote gone the other way they are wrong and beyond misguided and over the line into dangerous.
Since I would like this web site to continue to exist I hope they stay the heck off Freep. Armed rebellion in the United States should not even be a topic of debate here.
I don't know about that. Nobody seems to be interfering with the cities that pass laws prohibiting their police and social service workers from inquiring into immigration status or providing information to federal or state authorities who are trying to track down illegals. How can a law explicitly prohibiting city employees from cooperating with federal and state authorities investigating criminal activity (i.e. applying for and receiving unauthorized government benefits, unlawful use of false or stolen SS#s, etc) pass muster, but not a law that requires citizen cooperation with local authorities rooting out the same criminal activity?
So, all the s**t about 'upholding the Constitution' and 'to the best of my abilities' oath is, what...fluff?
From the precedents I've seen, it's about damn time these robed 'gods' start paying attention to the Constitution and not precedent.
Residents?
What about the lawful citizenry?
*urrrrgh!*

I hate to say you are right. All branches of the US government have decided that the laws only apply to US citizens and that those who enter illegally are to be treated to the US citizens benefits with no recourse to citizens.
I guess its too late.

They have a problem here in that there is supreme court precedent - this really needs to be changed at the Supreme Court level - or better yet, the Federal Government could start doing their job so local don’t feel the need.
Be careful what you wish for.
CW II bump
I don’t wish for it, but I am a native Texan, and I know that we have a natural tendency of not tolerating foolishness for very long.
Enforce the existing law while the lawyers play their games!
