BEDFORD, N.H. --Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, who supports an assault weapons ban, said he sees no problem with a Manchester City Republican Party's fundraiser where guests will use Uzis and M-16 rifles.

"No one is suggesting that automatic weapons be made available to the public. No one is suggesting that automatic weapons be made legal," Romney said at a town hall meeting in a school gym. "I support the Second Amendment. I support the ban on (automatic weapons). They're not connected with a fundraising event where they're using weapons not available to the public."

Umm.... No.

He's saying that he's comfortable with current laws as they relate to automatic weapons.

I wonder what he thinks “infringed” means.

Dear Mr. Romney:
I shudder at your ignorance, sir.
Automatic weapons ARE available to the public.
All you have to do is fill out the paperwork and pay the $200 per weapon - well then you have to wait a while, but eventually the paperwork gets approved and you are the legal owner of a fully automatic weapon.

Full auto isn't illegal.

Full auto is legal. You just have to pay your tax stamp, get the background check.

Full auto isn't cheap, but it's not illegal.

So I guess he believes in two Americas...one where the elite can own guns and the one where most of us live in where guns will be banned. Romney is a perfumed prince who stinks to high heaven. He’ll never get my vote. Not ever. Not even in November 2008.

Romney’s idiotic appeasement statement exemplifies precisely why I will not be voting for him. Repeal NFA ‘34, repeal GCA ‘68. Repeal the Bush Ban. Support the 2nd Amendment!! What don’t these idiot pols understand??

Is he talking full auto or semi-auto. He doesn’t seem to know or care, only spouting his support for the Clinton gun ban. So much potential in him, yet he won’t get my vote because he is a gun grabber.

"During his failed 1994 Senate run, Romney supported two gun-control measures strongly opposed by the National Rifle Association. As a 2002 gubernatorial candidate, he praised Massachusetts' strong antigun laws. And today he supports a ban on assault weapons." Circa 2002

"I support the Second Amendment." ~ Romney circa 2007

You wanted more examples of Romney's flip flopping. Here you go...this is the second one and there are many more.

Thi is dishonest as anything I have seen.. More “Two Ways” Mitt, he is showing his true stripes trying to have it ‘both ways’, and showing his Postmodernistic worldview!..IMO.

According to everyone, all you do is pay your $200 tax stamp and pass the background check and the gun is you. That is elitism?

"No one is suggesting that automatic weapons be made available to the public. No one is suggesting that automatic weapons be made legal," Romney said at a town hall meeting in a school gym. "I support the Second Amendment. I support the ban on (automatic weapons).

1. Full auto is legal, as others have already pointed out. Given that he was the chief executive of a state, one can only surmise that he is either woefully ignorant, or purposely lying. Neither speaks well of him as a candidate for President.

2. I suggest that full auto weapons be made available to the public. Specifically, we should at least revert to the pre-1986 situation where any law-abiding citizen in a free state could buy a full-auto by paying a tax of $200 plus the cost of the gun - which wasn't artificially high because the government forbid civilian ownership of newly-produced guns. What I'd REALLY like is to revert to the pre-1934 law, but that's just not realistic right now. One step at a time.

3. You cannot - CANNOT - support the 2nd Amendment if you are in favor of banning any class of guns, much less if you would be instituting a NEW ban (since full autos aren't currently banned). Additionally, you can't say you support the 2nd Amendment if you favor banning semi-autos, of which there are likely over 100 million (between rifle, pistols and shotguns) in the nation.

I support Romney as much as he supports the 2nd Amendment - the hypocritical, elitist SOB.

It is elitism because the cost of virtually all full autos (except genuine collectors' pieces) is probably ten times higher than it should be, due to the 1986 law that forbids the civilian ownership of any post-'86 full auto. Supply wasn't just constricted, it was choked to death. There are roughly 200,000 full autos available to use 300 million serfs - period, forever. M-16s that are 21 or more years old trade for $15,000, when the cost of a brand new one would likely be about$1,500-$2,000 (and that gives the manufacturer, wholesaler and dealer a very healthy profit) without the '86 law.

So it IS elitest - only wealthy people can afford to buy full autos now.

“only spouting his support for the Clinton gun ban.” And Mitt’s own AWB as Gov. of Mass.

I think he looks schitsophrenic. He says one thing and then the other. Is he for an assault weapon(is there really any other kind of weapon) ban?

Just as importantly, AFAIK there have only been two incidents where one of these legally owned weapons was ever used in a crime. The very record of the ownership and use of these firearms totally disproves the very basis for the gun-grabber’s angst they express so very often.
