Is Fred Thompson the GOP's Savior? (Time Magazine Cover)
Time.com ^ | 7/26/7 | Davis Yellen

Posted on 07/26/2007 7:21:34 AM PDT by hardback

Many Republican faithful, from the grass roots to the Capitol, have concluded that Fred Thompson, the preternaturally avuncular actor and former Senator from Tennessee, is the cure-all for their party's ills.

Thompson has yet to enter the presidential race, and yet Thompson already shares front-runner status with former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani in some national polls of gop voters.

Thompson will spend the rest of the summer raising money, which he was scheduled to do conspicuously at a donor event in Washington on July 28. Another advantage to waiting: the longer he remains an unofficial candidate, the longer NBC can air reruns of Law & Order featuring Thompson as Manhattan DA Arthur Branch without running afoul of the equal-time provision of federal campaign law.

"His timing has been brilliant so far," insists Tennessee Congressman Zach Wamp, who led the effort to convince Thompson he should run. "While he's been waiting, some candidates have been falling and the others haven't been moving. Frankly, there's been a lot of advantages to [it]. He's probably gotten more attention not being a candidate than he would have being a candidate."

While Thompson's undeclared campaign , raises money and figures out how to live up to the hype surrounding his candidacy, his potential opponents are busy adjusting to the new dynamics of the race.

The problem for Giuliani—and the rest of the field—is that Thompson has the same strategy, and the Tennessean's Southern drawl and conservative voting record are likely to play well in South Carolina.

If Thompson can keep enthusiasm high until he enters the race in the fall, he might be able to turn what was supposed to be a marathon race for the nomination into a relatively brief, four-month sprint.

These comparisons to “savior” and Reagan etc. that are constantly made by the media are quite suspect IMO.

Trying to gin up completely unrealistic and unattainable expectations that NOBODY in the world could ever live up to.

And if/when a slight stumble is made by the campaign (as happens), the RATS, liberals and Fred bashers can line up with fingers pointed.

All courtesy of and guided by the liberal media. It’s astonishing that more here on this forum don’t see this.

His choice of Abraham who is an open borders guy is quite disturbing.

You're not alone.

I'm concerned about Abraham too.... but I'm marching ahead until I hear more from Thompson about Abraham's influence or even his roll in the campaign:

Without death, retirement, or primary challenges against Republican senators who are embarrassments (Lott, Kyl, McCain, Stevens, Grassley, Lugar, Vitter, Specter, Graham, Hagel, Hatch, and Warner), it doesn’t matter a whole lot for the party if Thompson is in the White House vs Romney or even Giuliani for that matter.

TERM LIMITS NOW!

Oh you are just so gullible...

Everyone knows that Fred what to bring on the North American caliphate! it is sooo obvious that this is what this appointment is all about...

And then he will be free to spread his chain of abortion clinics through the Muslim world using un-inspected Mexican trucks...

Still got to work out the whole religious angle...

Care to address exactly what you find objectionable in his track record in Congress, other than supporting CFR, which he has well-explained?

I’ll take the opportunity to point out that Fred has an 86% lifetime vote rating with the American Conservative Union.

Perfect? No.

Pretty damn good? Yes.

Sure they will—because their candidate has a better chance of breaking wind than breaking 1% in the polls.

Sorry—Duncan Hunter does good things. He just isn’t a viable candidate for POTUS.

I believe that there are many here who don't want to have to pick between a new McCain and a new W.

We're hoping for better, but don't want to run ourselves. It's still a long time until the next election and there is other political work that has a higher priority than figuring out now who the next POTUS should be.

Time Editors.......... NO, there is no human who is our saviour. Us who belive... believe Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior, and for that we do not put our trust and faith in man. However, Thompson is a better choice as Presidnet than... Hillary or any liberal.

This non-campaign is getting old. Just another coronation wannabe. Can we get some real candidates who are willing to take the heat and answer questions? Why did you vote to acquit Clinton of perjury, Fred?

Well, why are you on a thread about a primary (soon to be announced) candidate?

I love Fred but to say anyone is the savior of the GOP is just wrong.

Well, it's the DBM that's referring to Fred that way, so take this "pronouncement" with a grain of salt about the size of Texas.

Yeah—I’ m with you. Why doesn’t he follow the lead of all of the other candidates and jump in early too? I mean—we need a candidate who will follow the crowd, right?

John LeBoutillier, the former congressman from NY and Newsmax columnist, suggests that Thompson will enter the race in September and perform so poorly as a candidate that he will be out of the running by November.

OK I have to call foul. He doesn’t, he can support Fred if he wins and has said so several times.

Fun is fun and fair is fair...
