A Kiwi soldier who returned to Iraq on a second tour of duty has been awarded one of Britain's highest military awards for bravery under fire.
Corporal Terry Knights - a former territorial solder in New Zealand - has been honoured with the Military Cross for bravery and leadership.
The recognition is bitter-sweet for the soldier, who serves with the British Royal Marines.
He returned home this month for his mother's funeral.
His father John Knights, of Motueka, said he was very proud of his son.
"When he rang to tell me, I burst into tears. He'd only been back in England two weeks after being out here for his mother's funeral.
"I said to him, 'Wouldn't mum have been proud'. It was very emotional."
The Military Cross, the third highest British defence force honour, was awarded to Corporal Knights for "gallantry during active operations against the enemy".
Mr Knights said his son's honour, and the Victoria Cross awarded to fellow Kiwi Corporal Willy Apiata, should be kept in perspective.
"It's like any other job."
Corporal Knights joined themarines 17 years ago while travelling in Britain.

Proud of NZ bump.
I’m amazed. What happened to NZ’s hatred of America?
Thanks Clint
Motueka is at the top end of the South Island, west of Nelson...
So this brave soldier is a South Island boy...
NZers have always been gungho heroes...
:)
I think the term is “earn” a medal. Or “be awarded” a medal.
Not “win” one.
“Winning” one makes it sound like a lottery.
SEMPER FI Corporal Terry Knights!
“I think the term is earn a medal. Or be awarded a medal.’
Yup. Thing is, winning isn’t PC, anyway. It implies there were losers, and we can’t have that. That’s why Academy Award presenters now say, “And the award goes to...” instead of “the winner is.”

> Im amazed. What happened to NZs hatred of America?
It is, and always has been, a figment of some people’s imagination on both sides of the Pacific.
> I think the term is earn a medal. Or be awarded a medal.
You’re probably right: I didn’t write the article, I just posted it for your enjoyment.
