Are messages on a Wallis sign going too far?

(7/23/07 - WALLIS, TX) - A small town just southwest of Houston, is getting some big time attention for a sign that sits on the side of the road and not everyone there is happy with the message.

In the small community of Wallis, a sign is the big talk of the town.

"To me they are racially motivated, they are singling out certain nationalities and that's just not appropriate," said Titania Newsom.

The sign sits in front of CNL's Icehouse. This month's message reads "Welfare started as a hand up, not a generational lifestyle."

Past messages have included:

"If you can't feed them, don't breed them"
"America proud, one language: English"

Some who find the messages offensive say they have taken their complaints to city hall. The bar's owner, Curtis ransom, says the town's police chief even stopped by and asked him to take the sign down.

"This is America, it's free speech, it's my property," said owner Curtis Ransom. "There's no cursing, there's nothing religious on there. There is nothing racist. All of my statements are general statements, it's meant for everybody."

There are those eagerly awaiting next month's message.

"They got a suggestion box in there," said Larry Alexander. "Anybody can come in there and put a suggestion on what you want on it. They pick out the ones they want to put on there."

Alexander says there is no reason to be offended by the sign's messages. As an American, the bar's owner says he has every right to express his opinion.

"I am tired of getting walked on," Ransom expressed. "I'm a taxpayer, I vote and it is time for us to have our say."

The bar's owner says many of the messages are thought up by his patrons. We're told people have even tried to steal the sign in the past but have been unsuccessful. (Copyright © 2007, KTRK-TV)

Bill Balsamico, the owner, can come up with some stuff.

We need more people speaking up on this sort of thing. It’s ridiculous to not talk about something just because it “hurts” someone’s feelings. More power to this guy!

Since there is no reference to race/color, I'd say Titania herself is racist, assuming that welfare cases are all minorities.

My thoughts precisely.

The majority of his signs speak for me.

I would, however, for the sake of brevity and politeness, omit all of the "F*#K"s, and replace "camel jockey" with a succinct "arab".

Other than that, I'm Soylent Squirrel, and I approve of his message.

Sounds like a pale imitation of the original: Casa D'Ice (Extreme language warning)

Why do you think “hate crime laws” were created? To arrest and silence people just like this.

I don’t care if he is right on the issues, anyone who would put that kind of profanity on a public sign is trash.

A woman can have a kid how often? How many women can one male impregnate and not provide for them and their kids in the same time?

That would depend on how cooperative the women are.

Believe it or not, I used to live in Wallis during my first post-college job. It’s about a half-hour south of I-10 south of Sealy. If you take the highway (36 if I recall correctly far enough, you get to Rosenberg. If you take Westheimer Rd from Houston, I believe it finally ends in Wallis.

It was back in my songwriting days when I lived there and my homage to it basically described a one-stoplight town with one store, one gas station, one garage and about two places to eat. The local movie theatre was boarded up. The train didn’t stop there and few cars did either.

There’s simply nothing in Wallis to get worked up about and any liberals that do are driving far out of their way just to get offended.

I look at this way, the first time a woman comes in without a husband and a way to pay the bill she gets a warning. The second time she gets spaded.

I think you made a mistake. The Casa D’Ice website you are looking up (with the profanity on their signs) is in PENNSYLVANIA, not Texas. Check the homepage.

I tried to Google for one in Wallis TX and came up empty. I think you owe the proprietors an apology.

The place is actually called C&L’s IceHouse, not CNL as noted in the article.
