Poll: American Support for War Inches Up (Rats,"stop the surge, it's working and we might win")

American support for the war in Iraq has risen somewhat as the White House has continued to ask the public to reserve judgment about the war until General David Petraeus files his report in the fall. In a New York Times/CBS News poll conducted over the weekend, 42 percent of Americans said taking military action in Iraq was the right thing to do, while 51 percent said the United States should have stayed out of Iraq. Support had been at all time low in May, when only 35 percent of Americans said the United States’ involvement in Iraq was the right thing and 61 percent said the United States should have stayed out. Still, the latest poll made clear that a two-thirds majority of Americans continue to say the war is going badly. However, the number of people who say the war is going “very badly” has fallen from 45 percent earlier in July to a current reading of 35 percent, and of those who say it is going well, 29 percent now describe it as “somewhat well” compared to 23 percent just last week.

Yeah, that would be a poll with actual credibility. Of course, asking people’s opinions on something they actually know about might lead to - gasp - serious and helpful dialogue.

Bush is the anti-Clinton. Clinton held a press conference to claim credit for the sun rising in the morning. Bush tries to be a gentleman and above partisan politics. Unfortunately: Politics is not a gentlemanly business.

Bush needs to take a big calculated risk.

He needs to loudly and specifically say: "The reason we haven't been hit by more 911 type attacks is my policy of confronting the enemy on his home turf in Iraq. If they aren't busy dying in Iraq we will soon be busy dying in America. I know that people are tired of Iraq but people need to ask themselves: 'Am I tired of the security that the war in Iraq is buying us?'"

And imagine that any NYT Poll is 95% Democrat of which 62% have to prove they are card carrying Moveon.org members. That constitutes a fair and unbiased sample for the NYT/CBS Polling Samples.

Absolutely. Also, pollsters should ask people if the support a "cut and run" policy if that policy will dramatically increase the chance of terrorist attacks on the US. Those results would be very different.

If we abandon Iraq it will be seen as a disastrous mistake within two years...
