Er...Norris's specialty isn't Gung Fu, it's Chun Kuk Do. His first expertise was in Tang Su Do, one of the branches of Korean martial arts that later became Tae Kwon Do (the other was Mu Duk Kwan).

As far as the Marines receiving hand-to-hand combat training, it's news to me. Why didn't we think of it before?

Once upon a time, both the Army and the Marines taught hand to hand combat in Basic Training. It was phased out shortly before I entered Basic though, because too many recruits were getting into trouble in bars on furlough (actually getting their backsides handed to them by civilians, or so the DI's told me).

If this new program was designed by somebody like Norris, though, it may well be worthwhile...

Norris had significant training in other styles, including judo. Incidentally, Norris was in the Air Force.

I remember reading about the ROK's in Viet Nam -- I think there were a division of them there in 1968-9, maybe two. They all had black belts in tae kwon do. The VC absolutely hated going up against them. The Viet Cong's standing orders said to minimize the American advantage in firepower by closing if possible and going hand-to-hand. That didn't work very well with the ROK's.

They also hated going up against Australians, but that was because the Aussies were bigger jungle fighters than the VC were, super spooky and invisible and tough. Oz gave Charlie the creeps, and the ROK's kicked his ass. Then we arclighted his ass. How'd we lose that sumbitch?

Oh, yeah -- the 'Rats threw the war.

One reason is because they were trained not to let a live enemy get that close but if by chance a live enemy got that close, the very un-politically correct bayonete and knife training were given for such situations.
