Gee, so I guess one just needs to invent a language and you can get away with anything.

that’s a crock! The US State Dept is only miles from the Montgomery County Courthouse .. if they wanted an interpreter they surely could have gotten on. Disgusting.

So I can speak gibberish, punch Hillary in the nose and be back in my home in 3 years with the state’s apology? What a country!

This also makes me sick.

>>The Washington Post, was denied a speedy trial after three years awaiting a court-appointed interpreter who could speak the tribal language of Vai.<<

Three bloody years they took, in a country where we are entitled to fair, speedy trials and in the end they let a probable rapist go.

Heads ought to roll.

and attended high school and community college here,

SO they could find folks that could communicate with him well enough for him to get a high school diploma and college credits, but not someone who could tell him what he did wrong when the indictment was read to him?

Revoke his diploma, negate his credits, and expell him from the country.

This purported pedophile can speak/understand English.
Even my dear old mother said she heard he attended high school here in
Missouri.
But I guess in Maryland, an accussed pedophile and a psychiatrist
get to decide which language MUST be used for court proceedings,
otherwise the perp goes free.

But here’s a link to a FOX News story:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,290300,00.html

“A court-ordered psychiatrist determined that Kanneh, despite his
functional facility with English — he originally spoke with detectives
in English, The Post reports, needed to have Vai spoken in order to
understand the proceedings against him.”

Mahamu Kanneh, a Liberian native who received asylum in this country and attended high school and community college here, according to The Washington Post, was denied a speedy trial after three years awaiting a court-appointed interpreter who could speak the tribal language of Vai.

We are a living and breathing Constitution based sovereign country.

Give him a break. /sarcasm in total

For all intents and purposes, Vai is a dead language. For those few who do speak it, it is sedondary to their native tongue, English.

GlobalSecurity.org ~ Liberia Country Study Some Vai, many of whom are Muslims, are literate in three different languages and scripts: Vai, Arabic, and English. The script has been kept alive largely as a matter of pride. It is not taught routinely to Vai children but is transmitted by knowledgeable elders to youngsters who express a desire to learn it.

I doubt that Mahamu Kanneh is even fluent in Vai.

This is beyond outrageous. I’ll bet the creep is paying taxes - the IRS wouldn’t hesitate to through him in jail for that without an interpreter.
